i posted the entire devlog of one of my old games, and tbh if there's one thing to remember about making any artistic project, it's this

This year has been a lot for everyone, and there are hard days ahead. You have to grab your moments of joy where you can. For us, it's a Thursday evening on the couch watching Critical Role with two weird cats, one of whom we weren't sure was going to be able to live here. That's good enough for me.

If you want to start making games, instead of trying to make your magnum opus on your first go, please do some game jams. Ludum Dare. Something short with a fixed time limit and specs you need to follow. Learn about developing under restrictions, how to get creative in them, how to scope smartly.

The best way journalists can support indie games is to cover more than whatever the current indie hits/darlings of the moment are. Games like Hades, Blue Prince, and Silksong do not need help with visibility, but discoverability is the biggest challenge facing many indie devs today.

I didn't want to add another hour of driving today so I found the closest thing to dark sky I could within 10 minutes and it was... Not very dark, but we made it work.

3x 30 second exposures stacked on phone, I think my laser fell out of alignment. I'll come back tomorrow for a better foreground. 🛰️

Playtesting can help you:
- Make sure people are taking away what you want them to from your story
- Balance combat encounters on a proper curve
- Ensure your UI/UX is as intuitive as it needs to be
- Find out where people are getting stuck when they shouldn't be

... and so much more!
I’ve seen small and new devs scared to show unfinished games because they might “spoil them.” If your audience is just your friends, then that might be true. But don’t you want your player base to be somewhat larger than that?

Playtesting is the secret weapon to making a good game!
Indie Dev Tip of the Day: playtesting isn't just about finding bugs. You don't know if your game is good until many people have ratified it. Until it consistently lands for large numbers of your testers - and don't forget to include new ones every time.

On Saints Row we had a debug npc named Skinballs (lol) that was literally just four spheres wrapped in different shades of skin texture so we could test lighting for different skin tones during development. But teams need to plan for that kind of testing with intentionality, and not enough do.

BY THE WAY

If you've updated to Windows 11 recently, you're probably on version 25H2.

There's a new setting in Settings: Privacy & Security.

Scroll aaaaaaaalll the way to the bottom and you'll see "Text and Image Generation."

TURN IT OFF.

As a producer I am obligated to say that these things should be considered within scope/production schedule and designed to impact both as little as possible when planning them out.

As a player I say it was delightful as hell when the inn made you work your tab off as a bellhop in Super Mario RPG.
Dev friends, add silly details to your game!
"But it's unbalanced!" "But only 10% of players will see it" "But..." I don't care, is it funny? Is it cool? Go for it!
Nekketsu Oyako is a traditional beat'em up for the PS1/Saturn where you play as the father or his two children to save the mother of a family.
There's a "beer" item that can replenish life, but it only the father can use it, the other two get a "ADULT ONLY" message and the item just stays there
