🚨 Interested in the form and variability of the supraglacial hydrological system? @hollywytia.bsky.social et al. explore the controls on channel distribution and characteristics on Swiss Alpine glaciers in a new paper hot off the press at The Cryosphere! ❄️ tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...
Distribution and characteristics of supraglacial channels on mountain glaciers in Valais, Switzerland
Abstract. Supraglacial channels form a key component of glacier hydrology, transporting surface meltwater to englacial and proglacial positions, which impacts ice flow dynamics, surface mass balance a...

Wonderful week spent with @geogdurham.bsky.social
students on the Arctic fieldtrip learning about Arctic environments, governance, and politics. Great enthusiasm all around! Students even led some roadside yoga and rounders when the bus broke down. Some pretty good northern lights too!

Had a lovely time at the @igsoc.bsky.social British Branch meeting in Oxford! Great to catch up with familiar faces and meet some new ones too. It was also nice to have received commendations for my talk and left with a new duck companion 🦆!

Endless debris flows...😱

These images of the debris flow that hit Bionaz (1600m, Valpelline) last night show why you should avoid rivers and streams during heavy thunderstorms in the mountains! 🌊

Shown here is Grigoriev ice cap (4600 m asl, Kirghizistan)

Not a single snow patch left up to the summits, for the first time in over 10 years! 😱

Fantastic turnout at the
@igsoc.bsky.social symposium ECR event last night! Really insightful advice from @iceybethan.bsky.social and Becky Sanderson about how to navigate networking and conferences! We enjoyed putting their tips into practice during speed networking afterwards.

Congratulations to @cristinabalaban.bsky.social who was back visiting Durham today for graduation! 🎓 Cristina's PhD research reconstructed the past glaciation of the Southern Carpathians, Romania, and she is now continuing her palaeoglaciological work as a postdoc in Prague. Well done Cristina! 👏❄️🍾

The magnitude of destruction after the 3:24 pm collapse of Birch Glacier is immense! 😱

All the forest has been razed and the ice/wood/debris dammed the Lonza river 🌊

Some buildings of Blatten are buried 🏠
