“Linda, you seem to have a deep-rooted vendetta against children.” Alice smirks, sipping her tea. “May I ask why? Must be quite the tale.” “I guess I can tell you, if it'll shut you up.” Linda says, turning back around to face her. “In my mortal life, I befriended these young kids in this house I took refuge in. I thought they loved me, but it turns out — ARE YOU PUTTING ON LIP GLOSS WHILE I'M TALKING?” Alice, who had pulled a clear, sparkly lip gloss out of her dress and was re-applying it, popped her lips in response as Vladimir and Vincent sniggered. Truthfully, Alice didn't want to hear Linda's story. She just wanted a reason to piss her off. “You fucking brat!” Linda yelled. Then, with a frustrated scream, turned back away from her again.

Foston pointed at Cranley, as though to say ‘See! Now that’s some good speculation, that is. You might think your wild ideas were good speculating, but they’re nothing compared to that. Call yourself a Breach traveller? You’re an embarrassment!’, or words to that effect. Clara didn’t like this. It was perfectly fine having anthropomorphic representations of multiversal constants and metaphysical constructs coming along on these existence-saving trips, but having a human? A dead one at that? This was taking the liquid waste produced by the kidneys, this was. Of course, Linda didn’t count. She was more like a pet. About to counter Foston’s very descriptive pointing with a pointing of her own, that would start with a silent ‘Yeah? …’, go on to incorporate several ‘up yours’, and culminate in a scathing ‘At least I can hold my body shape for more than a few minutes!’, Clara found herself interrupted by a furious beeping coming from Foston’s watch.

Bwaha, I have one instance of this word in my #Atlantis trilogy! This is from Book 1, when my teenage gods Kena & Mireia are learning about the Truth Spell. Things start to get a bit out of hand right after this 😂
“As you recite the incantation,” said the priestess, “concentrate on breaking down the subject’s inhibitions and limiting their ability to think abstractly. Think of it like you are drawing a curtain over their imagination, closing them up inside a small dark room. If they can’t think outside of that small room, then the lies won’t even come to them.” The priestess took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Mireia felt the energy creeping into the front of her skull even before she began to speak. “Uuranaman o’othzubaia, vanaramantok.” It was just as Mireia remembered: a kind of cloudiness seemed to flood her mind, making her feel like she was about to unravel. Her thoughts stumbled from one random observation to another. There was a fly in the room. She was hungry. Kena’s fingernails were still dirty from his garden. His garden was so beautiful. She ought to tell him she liked his flowers. She ought to have fish for supper. She ought to swat that fly. What was she thinking about? “Now, young Mu’u,” said Sister La’axoati, “how do you feel?” “Um. Drunk,” said Mireia. “And distracted. Also hungry.” “Iie ba, hunger isn’t usually part of it,” said the priestess. “But it sounds like it worked. Now, what I want to do is—” “I like your garden, Kena,” Mireia blurted. “I think it’s beautiful and you’re an amazing gardener.” She covered her mouth. Kena’s eyebrows shot up. “Oh, this is going to be interesting, isn’t it?” he said, grinning. Mireia suddenly felt extremely nervous.

Today's #WIPSnips shows that even in a #solarpunk setting, there are inhibitions to overcome. Jen's life with her neurodivergent dad means they have a lot more rules than other sixteen-year-olds. A lot of those are self-imposed. They aren't quite brave enough to ask for community support...yet.
In the morning, I’m up before Daddy. I start our day the way I always do. I start the kettle boiling water. I set my tea leaves and Daddy’s coffee beans out on the table. I put the griddle on the hot plate and start it warming up for toast. I put the bread, the marmalade, the butter and the milk on the table. I check Daddy’s tab feed on my tab to make sure he’s out of bed. It’s different when the grown-up in your life can’t always do the grown-up stuff. A lot of the other kids don’t get this. Maybe you will. When your grown-up needs help, there isn’t room for you to say you don’t feel like it. When your grown-up is struggling, there isn’t any room for you to throw fits. So you don’t. You do the things that need doing. You set the table. You check the schedule. You make sure everything’s where it needs to be and everything’s right. You take care of things. Because your grownup can’t always do it, and somebody needs to. Simple as that. When your grown-up can’t always do the grown-up stuff, you don’t run off without talking about it. You don’t stay out past the time you said you’d be home. You keep your promises. You take care of things. You keep them steady. Because if things aren’t steady, your grownup can spiral out of control and fall apart. I love Bunny. I love how happy she is and how she’s scared of nothing. But sometimes it gets on my nerves too, because she really doesn’t get that some things have consequences. Some things go really, really bad if you mess up. And once they start to spiral, they can’t be fixed. So you can’t let them start to spiral. You have to keep things steady. You have to take care of things, or everything gets wrecked.
