This notice is from the Takoma Journal, Jan. 2, 1931. Even Takoma’s trash collection has a history and has changed over the years. Monthly trash collection must have been a wonderful addition to city services. Before that it is likely that much of the trash ended up in backyards.

Historic Takoma recently acquired 12 volumes of bound copies of the Suburban Record newspaper, ranging from 1961 to 1974. The Record is a rich resource for us because it covered news and events in Montgomery County, including Takoma Park, during a period for which we have limited materials.

How do you know that your youth is spent? Read this poem from the Senior Citizens Association Scrapbook from the late 1960s and 1970s to find out. Unfortunately we do not know the poem’s author. (Note: “orbit.”is a typo and should read “obit.”)

During the parade on July 4, 1950, the Takoma Park Police pretend to arrest Mayor Ross Beville, grabbing him by the arm and putting him into the back of a police wagon. This photo was a gift from the photographer, Henry Marschalk. Happy Fourth of July to everyone!

The Takoma Hall was constructed in 1894 on Cedar Street, NW (across from today’s 308 Carroll Street). In 1912 the Cedar Street “subway” (underpass) was excavated to remove the dangerous grade crossing of the B&O Railroad. As a result, Takoma Hall gained a new first floor (behind the horse buggies).
