GI tract immune “gates” called goblet cell antigen passages (GAPs) need the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M4

Alcohol silences M4 allowing bacteria to leak to the liver

Repurposing M4 agonists may restore innate immunity and prevent alcoholic liver disease

Early-onset colorectal cancer has doubled in 20 years—why?

New 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 study from Díaz-Gay et al Ludmil Alexandrov lab here @UCSanDiego discovers mutational clues:

Exposure to bacteria-derived colibactin leaves a genetic imprint, especially in tumors from young people and high-incidence countries
Damage from gut bacteria may play a role in the rise in colon cancer in young adults
Scientists have a new clue in the mystery of why younger people are getting more colon cancer. It may have to do with a toxin produced by a common gut microbe.
