One of the government's plans for the NHS is "left shift", taking services from hospitals and placing them in the community. Closer to the residents, more responsive to their needs, cheaper, and faster services.

What's not to like?

This is not as easy as some think. A short thread:

Speaking to HSJ, the NHS's finance boss has set out first steps to a "much fairer" financial system:
- Deficit support to be phased out in three years for most providers
- Funding to move back to "fair shares" in same timeline
- Allocations issued on a three-year basis

Nearly 50 NHS trusts that perform well on patient care have been downgraded because they are in deficit.

But analysis of NHS England's own figures shows two-thirds of those are under-funded - raising questions about the fairness of the new league tables

NHS England has been pushing trusts to treat more patients from the same (or less) resources.

But even trusts with productivity improvements are overspending their budgets - suggesting this alone isn't the answer to the service's financial woes.

Says workers on this visa had more problems at work due to lack of support. Adds UK "cannot be bringing in people when there are so many people here who are unemployed".

Says it used to take three mins to go through a set of paper notes.

The govt says NHS league tables went through a "rigorous" fact-checking process. Yet a version marked "final" contained errors that were only spotted at the last-minute. As a result 14 trusts - including Jim Mackey's former trust - changed segment.

The health sec says league tables help patients choose where to get treatment.

But some of the best for patient care have been marked down due to deficits.

Does the government really want patients to be diverted away from these hospitals?
