The Caucus was founded in 1975 by four activists, Pokey Anderson, Bill Buie, Hugh Crell and Keith McGee. From its earliest moments, the organization emphasized electing pro-equality candidates and supporting issues important to Houston's LGBTQ+ community.

Kylie McNaught, a Harris County LGBTQIA+ Commission member, spoke in opposition to a gender policy Cypress-Fairbanks ISD trustees passed on Jan. 16 that would eliminate recognition of trans and non-binary students throughout the district and force staff to out children to their parents.
