Every Friday my mother would buy me the 'Battle' comic. It introduced me to 'Charley's War' and the #GreatWar

It's interesting to note that the average age of death of my last three paternal forbears, when juxtaposed onto a #golf course, and contrasted against my age, suggests that I'm now hitting my third shot on the 13th hole.

From my vague memory, I believe that John Maclean's wife, Agnes Wood, was from Hawick.
John was highly critical of, and a fervent critic of the #GreatWar He was totally opposed to conscription in #WW1 and was jailed for sedition and agitation.
In 1918 he went on a hunger strike whilst in prison.

As the media is awash with royal correspondents discussing nonentities with spurious titles, I think of John Maclean and his inspirational words: “All hail the Scottish Worker’s Republic”. I first heard of him there in Lenin’s mausoleum in Red Square in Moscow back in 1968.
