A handsome scene of #Phoenix, #Arizona circa 1900. Back then the Phoenix population was around 120,000. Today the metro Phoenix population is approx. 5,250,000.

More #oldcars Fin Fun at Old #Tucson in the '60's. Old Tucson was built in 1939 to make an epic movie titled #Arizona. Luckily, the movie set stayed alive and continues to prosper 85 years later. For movie info see:

Something BIG was going on in Oatman, AZ, when this RPPC scene was captured. We speculate it was about 100 years ago based on the #oldcars. We have NO idea what the occasion was. Note how formally the men area dressed. RPPC = Real Photo #Postcard. RPPCs weere often made "on the fly". #postcards

Here is the first #postcard for this icon, published in 1951.

Since we just posted that 1917 #Flagstaff area #postcard we figured we might as well put up a post about what's locally known as The Weatherford Road. It's a Long Story, of course, but it's all fairly well told with the resources available in this link

This is an intriguing 1917 #postcard. Where was this photo created? At first we thought it might have been the San Francisco Peaks Boulevard but we're not confident in that guess. In any event, it has to have been on a classic mountain road somewhere near #Flagstaff. Note Grand Canyon postmark.

I first found this sweetie #postcard in the mid-80's. It has a fave ever since. All of the classic icons are there from the Santa Fe engine to Club 66 on #Flagstaff historic "front street". The Commercial Hotel burned down long ago but all the other buildings remain in use & good condition.

Believe it or not, this was once a wildly popular #Flagstaff, #Arizona tourist attraction. People actually got off the train and stayed overnite so they could do The Bottomless Pit right & proper. The pit was long ago filled in. It was located by what's now Continental Country Club

North of #Prescott, AZ, lie the #GraniteDells. The rough rock ramparts posed impossible challenges to early road builders until after WWI when mass quantities of explosives were free for the taking. Road builders put on "Blow Shows" and 100s of people came to watch blasting ops. #Postcards #Arizona

This was & is known as Yarnell Hill on highway former US 89. Today is a second, separate ribbon of asphalt traverses the famous (and infamous) hill. It's as spectacular today as it ever was. The stark contrast w/the rock cliffs and the desert below is awesome! #postcards #postcard #Arizona

Jalopies have prolly been around since the Days of Roman Chariots and Covered Wagons on The Oregon Trail. Check out the #Oldcars jalopy we found in front of the #Holbrook #Arizona Courthouse. This jalopy was once prolly a Model A Ford convertible coupe. Foto is circa 1950. #postcards #postcard

#Arizona has had Inspection Stations prolly since modern transportation began. I have vivid memories of one from the 50's. As Dad pulled in, the ground was covered with tarantulas spiders. Mom was shrieking and I was freaking. The uniformed inspector didn't care #postcards #oldcars #Holbrook

BIG Fin Fun on #Route66 in #Holbrook #Arizona back in the mid-60's. #postcard #postcards #oldcars

#Holbrook, AZ's Wigwam Village #6 is a famous Rt. 66 icon built in 1950. #Postcard was printed in early 1951. Chester Lewis cut unique royalty deal that paid 10 cents a pop to original Wigwam patent holder. Gotta read it to believe it! #postcards #Arizona #Route66

Here's a pre-1907 #postcard. How do we know? EZPZ. Prior to March 1907, it was illegal to write a message on the back of #postcards! You had to squeeze your message into a small space below the postcard view. This card is circa ~1905 +/-. #Bisbee

1917...

A bit daring of a #postcard! Note the single, unaccompanied woman. Very daring, indeed! Prescott has more than its fair share of old #postcards becuz it was affluent and people BOUGHT and mailed all those various postcard views! 'Twas a fertile postcard market for sure!

"Just a wish from this mountain town with Christmas morn so near. That naught but good may come to you. Through all the glad New Year."

Believe it or not, this #postcard view of GUrley St. looks about the same today. Famed Courthouse is at right out of sight. Check out all those awesome #oldcars! There's now a webcam on bldg @ left. You can check out the view here:

Fun #postcard! View shows one of Old Prescott's most remarkable bldgs. It's long gone. The 1908 card was postmarked from Wagoner, now a whiff of a ghost town ~40 mi. South of Prescott. We visited there a few years ago. Not much to see. Walnut Grove Dam was nearby. Liked the card so I bought it!

$4 for a night in "a championship ugly motel"...

Classic #postcard. It's definitely not one of those "wish you were here" renditions.
March 27, 2025 at 3:27 PM
Despite the near univeral adoption of the word "motel" some stubborn owners stuck to the archaic "Motor Hotel" well into the 50's. Here's a classic example on a mega-motel-row east of Phoenix's Van Buren Ave. Scores of motels clogged the roadsides. #postcard #postcards #Phoenix #Arizona #US89 #US80
