From #2 in the world to #53 in the world. 💔 Māteatea ake nei.

As Carl Schurz said, "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right".

There's sooo much for the people and for the next AoNZ government (tomorrow please? Or next week? 🥺) to set right.

Awesome to hear how well other people's countries are doing.

Not so awesome to see our own moving backwards in every sense, and accelerating 🥺
Wow.
And what are “we” (read #CoC) doing AoNZ?

WATCH: Seriously, if you’re following ANY bike-lane debate, you HAVE TO WATCH this news story. You actually can’t make this up. Ford claims without evidence that bike-lanes are bad for small business, and THE ACTUAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION obliterates him with data.

Safe bike-lanes mean business.
Annex businesses tell Ford to back off Bloor bike lanes
Stores in the Annex say the Bloor bike lanes have been a big boost to business. As Michelle Mackey reports, the neighborhood's BIA wants the province to back off its new bill that could see the lanes ...

You might not have realised that you needed this thread but you do. I think we all do.
You there. I want you to say, aloud, at some point today "I'm really glad I'm good at..." And then you're gonna say something you think you do pretty well.

If you don't think you do anything pretty well, I want you to say "one little thing that makes me unique is..."

And if you can't do either?

I was today years old in learning the difference.

If you have some pūtea to spare, consider sending it in the direction of Rights Aotearoa and / or coffee for Paul (hai tohu o te whaiwhakaaro me te tautoko). ❤️
The civil liberties approach asks: "What *can't* the government do to me?"
Universal Human Rights asks: "What does every person need to live with dignity?"
In Aotearoa, this means addressing housing, healthcare, education, and cultural rights—not just protecting speech and assembly.

This is 2025, and a certain political party is celebrating these changes.

For the record one of the key 'other minorities' was anyone with disabilities.

This is deeply disturbing, please make sure you're okay before reading.
The new Social studies curriculum is atrocious in general, but I just want to shine a spotlight on the explicit retreading of literal Nazi propaganda that is woven through the year 10 content! Buckle up this shit is shocking!

The word of the day is kātipuhi.

kātipuhi: (noun) not firing, ceasefire

Do *not* recommend breaking words down as a learner. I add these because with this word I am *certain*:

kāti: (interjection) stop! cease! enough!

puhi: (verb) to shoot, blow, fire (a gun), shooting, blowing

I miss having Marilyn Waring in the halls of power. ❣️
There is one kind of work that is not recognized, would be very unlikely to be automated, is responsible for all other work, and is done by what economics strangely calls "non-primary producers"

Meanwhile you voted yourselves how much in pay rises? And have how many extra entitlements?

I'm not going to say you shouldn't have them.

I am going to say with my whole chest that firefighters, teachers and public servants deserve far better working conditions and yes more pay!

With the voting over, we hope that council’s across Aotearoa will consider how the decisions they make impact our lives.
From pools to parking, council decisions can have a huge impact on disabled people’s lives
It's crunch time for local elections – so what do disability advocates think should be on the agenda for newly elected councils?
