A quick glance through the news and there are multiple scandals just today which would have brought down a president in previous eras. And I don't think anyone expects any of them to stick in 2025.

Great development for Canadian connectivity. The large incumbents have had ample time and we still have numerous dead zones, it is time to allow and encourage some smaller players to finish connecting Canada. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Dear Mr VP: I'm pretty sure our national public broadcaster dreams of having that sort of influence. Thank you for your concern.

This absolutely should not be allowed to blow over, yet I fear it will. You know how "the coward" often precedes the name of Robert Ford in writings about the American west? How about that honorific for the entire Republican Party?
The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

agreed.
For me, this is at the crux of the UCP's use of the notwithstanding clause.
By using the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively - which, again, they *can* but *need not* do - the UCP is not simply admitting that their laws are breaching Charter rights and bypassing the courts.

They are further admitting that their laws cannot be justified in a free and democratic society.

Wow. Refusing to properly fund their own policy initiative that has come back to bite them.
A UCP-majority committee refused to give Alberta’s chief electoral officer the funding he says he needs to administer recall and citizen petition applications.

Campaigners say it’s a political move to thwart their efforts to hold the government accountable. #AbLeg

Nenshi has been in the Alberta legislature exactly one day. He's going to have an impact.
Danielle Smith is using the notwithstanding clause to protect herself while crushing individuals' Charter rights.

That’s not freedom, that’s cowardice.

And Albertans won’t stand for it.

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.
The UCP government has invoked time allocation and on a bill removing Albertans' Charter rights.

And they're using the notwithstanding clause to do it.

Here's why that is a dangerous precedent. And why real conservatives need to stand up against it.
