Yvonne Cormeau, who survived for more than a year as an #SOE wireless operator in Occupied France. Incredibly important and dangerous work.
She also paid this tribute to the ordinary French folk who helped her - risking their lives to allow her to transmit from their home.

The agony on the face of Liane Berkowitz, a determined opponent of the Nazi regime, photographed by the Gestapo upon her arrest.
Liane was nineteen-years-old at the time and was pregnant.
This picture is part of a heartbreaking exhibition in the execution shed at #Plotzensee.

The world was a better place when you could buy film memorabilia and even pick up a free film magazine at the cinema.
The most popular film magazine in the UK of the 1980s and early 1990s? It was this: anyone else remember it?!

One of the finest #WW2 agents against the Nazis: Baltimore-born #VirginiaHall was trapped in Paris in 1939. Fleeing to London she joined #SOE (and later #OSS).
Despite having lost her left leg from the knee down, she became one of the Gestapo’s most-wanted enemy agents.

Behold A Pale Horse is on YouTube. Fred Zinnemann film from 1964 based on an Emeric Pressburger book & starring Peck, Quinn & Shariff.
A story about how the Spanish Civil War lingered over Spain decades later. V downbeat - possibly why it's largely forgotten.

Carried on his friends' shoulders: the incredible Jimmy Ward, who won the VC when he climbed out ONTO THE WING of his Wellington bomber over the North Sea to put out a fire which was going to bring down the aircraft. I'm currently writing about one of the other men in this photo. #WW2 #antifascist

Cover reveal! ‘Nazi Ghost Train’

Here is the UK cover of 'The Nazi Ghost Train' which comes out next year. I love it! Thank you, Mirror Books. It's an amazing true story of an act of resistance which saved the lives of hundreds of resisters, airmen and SOE agents. More about the book here.

Film books on the shelf: Burt Lancaster by Kate Bufod.

Always loved Burt since I first saw his cheesy smile in The Crimson Pirate one rainy afternoon.

The B-17 saved by a “miracle”

In the summer of 1978 two former members of a B-17 crew met to discuss their escape from death in a raid on Kassel in Germany in 1943. Sitting on a porch in Tarrytown, New York, co-pilot Bohn Fawkes turned to his navigator Elmer “Benny” Bendiner and said: “You…

I loved Philip Larkin when I was a miserable, depressed youngster.

I’m less miserable now but I still love Larkin for this:

“…we should be careful
Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.”
