Interdisciplinary scientist. Light, vision science, displays, adaptive optics. Head of the School of Computer Science at the University of Leeds.
Old photos of the University of Leeds campus I took when I was a summer intern in 1985 (I was 5 😂)! There’s a tree in the middle of Clothworkers Court and the lab was in the Department of Colour Chemistry in what is now the @leedsunimedia.bsky.social .

There’s beauty everyone you look! Would you expect to see such a floral display close to November literally on top of a motorway? Given you a big clue there - but where was this taken?

Huge congrats @jtimaging.bsky.social !!
I'm delighted to share the news that I've been promoted to (full) Professor. Feeling very thankful for all those who have mentored and supported me over the years, the smart and enthusiastic team I get to work with on cool science, and the colleagues who make Glasgow a great place to work.

Why do some animals have slit-like pupils?. This nice vid does a great job of explaining some of the subtleties that myself and Martin Banks articulated in our 2016 Science Adv. paper. If you get bored of the optics there's some cure pics of cats!

It’s a couple of days past the solstice but this is when the Sun sets the latest. The Sun rises the earliest before the solstice and the longest day is really a compromise between the two. Why ? I think because the Earth’s orbit around the Sun is elliptical so it doesn’t go at a constant speed

2025 is the 200th Anniversary of Railways - which started in the NE of England with the Stockton Darlington Railway . Here’s the train statue on a lovely day ! For pedants - it actually ran from Shildon to Stockton. Ps I am not a train spotter but feel I’m on a slippery slope 😂

Pleased to say that I will no longer have to wear two pairs of spectacles at work simultaneously. Due to the arrival of new ones. Like Dominic Cummins I get my eyes tested in the North East. New specs have my name laser inscribed to aid in future losses but haven’t figured out how to read it yet !

Scientists claim to have discovered 'new colour' no one has seen before
"Olo" is said to be a saturated blue-green - but some say the existence of a new colour is "open to argument".

Sunrise over Leeds! The time lapse video of the sunrise shows a sun pillar - the vertical light beam above the Sun moving across the sky as the Earth rotates.

Leeds Sunrise ! It’s now moved to be more northerly than southerly since we’re past the Equinox !
March 26, 2025 at 7:47 AM
Another day, another great sunrise. Although looking forward to the clocks changing so I don’t need to get up to quite so early. If you look carefully, you can see a Sun pillar which is a shaft of light vertically above the Sun!

Good morning Leeds ! The sunrises are getting earlier! Predicting the position of the Sun in the sky is not a new science. But there’s always a part of me that thinks maybe we got it wrong and winter will last forever. Fortunate that theory has been falsified for at least another year.

A couple of the conjunctions of the planets. The first was taken from Richmond: you can see Orion, Mars, Jupiter and Sirius - the Dog Star. The second was taken from the Chevin overlooking Otley near Leeds. You can see Venus and Jupiter. The red light at the bottom is a real dog 🐶!
