'Tis the season in which I remember that not only am I terrible at thinking of gifts to give others, I also struggle to think of what I want myself

Omgeeee where to begin?

Wise Child subtle feminism and open creation spirituality in middle grades
The Sparrow theodicy as a YA
Black Theology & Black Liberation in grad school
Busman’s Honeymoon as a grownup love story and reckoning with the consequences of detective stories
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Happy St Martin's Day! May we follow his example in renouncing violence, giving to Christ in the poor, and defending the orthodox truth of the Incarnation against Arian heresy. 🕯️

OK but how do we all know about the Edmund Fitzgerald? I definitely did not learn about this until I moved to Canada, and even once I knew did not find it as big a deal as the memes this year seem to be. How did I miss this lore?
yes yes we all know about the Edmund Fitzgerald, rest her soul, but did you know about the ship laden with explosives that sank in the mouth of the Thames in 1944 and could explode at any minute and which attempts to disarm keep failing

This is a great article about LOTR, D&D, and so much more
The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

They said this when Roe fell about why they couldn’t do anything then…with Biden as president. Look at how that turned out and ask yourself if you believe them this time.
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

Sigh. Canada Post I really want to support your workers, but when I just received in the mail a letter I *returned to a post office last Friday* across which someone has written "MOVED" in sharpie and yet was still delivered to my home I ..... have some concerns.

All I’m asking is for the millionaires in the Senate to show the same courage in standing up to fascism that regular people are showing in streets every day.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

The joke is on the trads. Whether on not they grant Him entry in the Sacrament, the Lord is already with His people and cannot be taken from them by any means
state of the trad catholic discourse on the other site is debating whether undocumented immigrants should be able to receive the Eucharist if you were wondering how that was going

The challenge of the priesthood is that there are just so many types of things one ought to be doing, and if you take your eye off the ball in one area, it begins to fall apart.

This is the church I know.
UPDATE: Reached out to the Rev. Hannah Kardon, a United Methodist minister who was there that day and has been active in religious demonstrations at Broadview.

“They are making it clear that they are scared of prayer … it speaks the truth that what they are doing in that building is evil.”

This complain-y post got some traction and based on the responses I’ve gotten, I really think the problem is less that the resources don’t exist, it’s that we name them insider-y jargony names and/or suck at SEO.
Good morning Anglicans! I need more resources for new Anglicans that are called things like "rookie Anglican" or "an introduction to Anglican tradition" or "what is All Saints Day" that are SEO so my people quit going to ACNA resources aligned with the 2008 Jerusalem Declaration ⚓

OVER A MILLION USERS

DISCUSS SUICIDE WITH CHATGPT

EVERY *WEEK*

what the fuck are we DOING here
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

Being a woman priest is just being told this every day by some jerk on the internet and, on occasion, by your colleagues.
as a thought exercise for everyone reading ross douthat's latest missive in the NYT, i want you to think about sending an email to your entire company with the subject line "Did Women Ruin the Workplace?", then think about the over/under on the number of minutes/hours you would still be employed

Congratulations to the many clergywomen in New York who now, when told they're too young to do what they're doing, can say they're older than the mayor.
