#Wikidata really needs to be better known - and more widely used - by historians.

Several years ago, we put a whole bunch of data from a project into Wikidata. Now, as a result, some people who we had no more info for aside from a name or could not disambiguate are actually identifiable. LOD FTW.

😵‍💫 Every time a ‘treasure’ of national importance is ‘discovered’, it’s an instant tabloid headline - but there’s no guarantee the nation will ever benefit (if it can even raise enough public cash to acquire the item) and vital archaeological context is often destroyed in the process of ‘discovery’.

I imagine there’s a very robust debate about detecting and the disposition of finds: scourge, blessing, or both?

Pass a law giving first refusal or ownership to the state and many of these finds disappear into the void.

The “stuff” is very cool, but managing your posterity seems like a real mess!

1446 #Treasure cases in 2024. Up from 1266 in 2023 - that's a c.14% rise.

How much will end up in museums? At what cost? Where will rest go? Private collections? eBay?

If previous years are to go by, less than 1/2 will find a safe place...

Utterly miserable reading -

"1,343 #treasure finds reported in 2023 (1,091 object cases and 252 coin cases). Of these cases:

❌️328 (24%) were acquired by museums (260 object cases, 68 coin cases)"❌️

Mind sets need to change on donating finds to Museums

1 x donated find or reduced cost artefact

Per county

Per year

So Sussex Museums on average have received 10 donated finds in 10 years

Why's that ?, Museums cant afford it, finders are giving less ?

Ultimately accessibility is reduced.
