I am deeply honored to have received the #DeutscherStudienpreis by Julia Kloeckner @bundestag.de🏆🇩🇪

This PhD award by the #KoerberStiftung values rigorous, societally relevant research – which is exactly what I strive for in my work @lmumuenchen.bsky.social #LMU & @eui-eu.bsky.social #EUI!

These findings highlight how new institutions like the #AIIB adapt selectively to the existing regime complex, balancing #performance and #legitimacy.

AIIB–#WorldBank cooperation is less common in countries with existing Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) ties to China.

AIIB–#ADB cooperation increases with corruption levels and is more prevalent in BRI-affiliated countries.

Drawing on original data for 277 Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (#AIIB) projects from 2016–2023, they show that cooperation is extensive but highly context-dependent. When and where does the AIIB cooperate?

📣 New research: In a new paper, @bendassler.bsky.social, together with Angelo Gerber-Helm and @mirkoheinzel.bsky.social, analyses how newly created contender institutions navigate their pre-existing institutional environments:

Partners and rivals? The AIIB’s cooperation with preexisting multilateral development banks
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is often seen as a challenger to established Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) like the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), whi...

Does #Trump 2.0 mean the decline of global governance and the resurgence of traditional great-power politics?

The death of global governance is not inevitable but will depend on how major powers respond, argue @benjaminfaude.bsky.social and I in a recent article:

The first #G20 summit in Africa was overshadowed by #US absence. What does this tell us about this institution – and int' politics more generally in the age of Trumpism?

I had the pleasure to share my views about these questions with Romain Chanson for @jeuneafrique.com

Is the #US 🇺🇸 disengagement from the #LIO a Trump-specific or a more general phenomenon?

Treating #Trump as a mere aberration risks overlooking structural forces that are driving the US away from the LIO, argue Leonard Schütte (@belfercenter.bsky.social) and I in #ZFAS:

Since I started working in academia, it has been my ambition to conduct rigorous research on topics that matter. This is why I am particularly thrilled about the #DeutscherStudienpreis of the #Körber-Stiftung, that puts emphasis on the societal relevance next to the excellency of PhD theses.
