Amid drone massacres in Ethiopia's ongoing war with rebels in its Amhara region, the government has ordered locals to attend region wide pro government rallies. Letters like these warn of unspecified consequences for those who don't show up.

Mandatory rallies: a time honored tradition in Ethiopia.
Amharic language letter sent to different employment offices demanding mandatory participation at pro government rally. Translation: "To (name concealed by piece of paper) Date: Dec 7th 2024. Subject: On the upcoming peace rally "With regards to the subject of this letter, you are known to be a resident of the Motta Kebele 03 area. "As such, tomorrow, Wednesday December 18th 2024, we urge you to attend the people's mass rally which will take place in the Motta town Kebele 03 area at 6:30 in the morning." "Take note: for those who aren't present at the rally, we take no responsibility for the legal action that will be taken against you." *Stamped* Amharic language letter sent to different employment offices demanding mandatory participation at pro government rally. Translation: Date: December 17th 2024. To: (name blotted out in blue marker). Subject: "The upcoming demonstration" "As is stated in the subject above, there will be an upcoming demonstration under the slogan "All for peace, peace for all," to be held in the city of Bahir Dar on December 18th 2024 starting from 6:30 AM. As such, you are to present yourself to the Fasil 02 kebele administrative office at that time in order to participate in the rally." "Take note: As places of employment will be closed for the day, you are expected to participate in the demonstration. For individuals, groups or organizations who don't take heed of these orders and fail to appear at the rally, we will take action per the orders of the [Ethiopian army] command post]."
