A selection of fury from Labour MPs, ministers and advisors - “This is batshit crazy” “they are f-ing deluded” “did we watch the Tories and think, let’s have a bit of that?” “why are you slagging off your main rival and then putting him on the morning round to show everyone how much better he is”

As with most crises, there's an opportunity here for the government to react by, getting one of their SOBs in at the BBC and using the supposed 'lack of balance' crisis to make Ofcom much more muscular with regards to GBnews. Sincerely doubt Lisa Nandy will do it though!

The relationship the government has with twitter is a bit like the one the previous labour government had with tabloids, simultaneously afraid of their power and yet by appeasing them for every little thing, enhancing their power.

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

In case you missed it yesterday, Britain's main upcoming problem will be that immigration will be far, far too low. Politics may have gone mad, but reality is an unforgiving thing. We need to start encouraging people in and paying them to stay.

Full on police state stuff
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

Its genuinely exhausting for everyone involved that the cycle is
1- BNP style policy gets announced
2- Labour comms say something like well yes but also no....
3-Labour MPs and others clearly have a freak out about it behind the scenes
4-Labour comes out with a clearer condemnation of said policy
NEW: Labour condemn Tory plan to strip people of indefinite leave to remain:

“It’s utterly grotesque that Tories want to deport people with the lawful right to be here to achieve ‘cultural coherence’.

“This policy would mean tearing families apart and ripping out our neighbours from communities."

The actual regime that these people are hankering after is Dubai: a small elite of citizens, most immigrants to be transient, insecure and all immigrants to be second-class. In reality they would hate the world they would create and would find ever-more ridiculous scapegoats for their failure.

Hard to overstate how extreme this is. It would allow the government to deport someone at any time after ILR is granted if they claim any state benefit at all (including the state pension), or if their annual income drops below £38,700 for six months before *or after* IDL is granted.
Via @sundersays.bsky.social the Conservatives' draft legislation - absolutely clear that it applies to (and is intended to apply to) legal permanent residents claiming state pension (on the basis of their contributions) or child benefit for British kids.
