Our #ObjectoftheDay is this ancient Egyptian stone fragment. It might have come from a tomb wall, possibly a false door. The hieroglyphic inscription most likely detailed the titles of the owner.

Our #ObjectoftheDay is this oil lamp with elongated spout and handle, round body, with small centre hole. The top is decorated with palmettes and volutes with Erotes and Dionysus head.

#Onthisday in 30 CE, the Roman #Emperor Nerva was born. This copper alloy #sestertius can be dated to 96 CE and shows the profile portrait of Nerva facing to the right wearing the laurel wreath on its observe. The reverse depicts clasped hands holding a legionary eagle set on prow. CC.451

#ObjectoftheDay is this wooden djed-pillar #amulet. Meant to be an image of the spine of the #god #Osiris & represents the idea of stability. Djed-pillar amulets were essential in Egyptian afterlife as, without a spine a person would not be able to sit, stand or move around in the #afterlife. E.9302

This digitised photo negative shows a limestone slab with hieroglyphic inscriptions. The slab was found at the site R70 at Reqaqnah, during the 1901-1902 excavation season led by John Garstang.

Our #objectoftheday is this Apulian red-figure bell krater decorated with the portrait head of a bearded soldier, wearing a Thracian helmet. It was found in Taranto, southern Italy, and is dated to around 340 BCE.

Our #objectoftheday are these vividly coloured #ancientEgyptian #glass #beads. They can be dated to the #NewKingdom and come from the site of Tell el-Amarna, where #excavations have shown that there were a number of #workshops that specialised in the manufacturing of glass.

This digitised glass plate negative photograph is from Garstang’s 1906 work in the site of Dakkah. The image depicts the Temple of Dakkah, looking though the temple axis towards the pylon.

This #transformationtuesday we are sharing a #photo of one of our ancient Egyptian pots being conserved. The fully reconstructed pot was part of our ‘Before Egypt’ temporary exhibition in 2019 and is now on display in one of the museum’s galleries.

For this #ScienceSunday we are sharing a photo of the visit from the Digital Innovation Facility staff. They came over in November 2022 to #laser #scan a number of the museum's #artefacts, including this ancient Egyptian #coffin lid. The scans are used to produce #3Dmodels of the objects.

#ObjectoftheDay is the rim and body of a black figure, white ground #ancientGreek #lekythos. This type of vessel was used for storing oil and more specifically olive oil. The white ground technique used made them too fragile for regular use & they were mainly associated with funerary rites. C.655

This glass plate #negative shows the reverse of a red slate votive tablet from site 6 (Lion Temple). It depicts King Tanyidamani in a long robe, with helmet-crown and sceptre. The original #photo was took in 1910 by Garstang during his #excavations of the ancient Sudanese site of Meroë. JG/M/E/7/b

This digitised glass plate #negative was taken in 1907 by Garstang during his #survey of #Anatolia. The #photo shows a carved stone giant headless #eagle lying on its side by a satchel and a rifle on a hill in Yamoola, (Yemliha, #Turkey).

#TBT to the summer of 2023 & a visit from Ruth, a PhD candidate at the @livancworlds.bsky.social , @liverpooluni.bsky.social analysing this ancient Egyptian Middle Kingdom box coffin belonging to the soldier Userhet. Ruth is using XRF to determine the composition of the paint .

Our #objectoftheday is this #ancientEgyptian wooden statuette of an unnamed man striding forward, a symbol of eternal vitality. It was #excavated at Abydos & it can be stylistically dated to the 12th Dynasty and identified as a Ka-statue, which were placed in tombs to receive offerings. E.7082
