🧵 New paper out🚨🧠! Information about motion is key to vision. Head motion signals from the vestibular system robustly modulate visual cortex activity. Despite this profound modulation, we still don’t know how these signals reach visual cortex - or even what aspects of head motion are transmitted.
🤯 👁️ Did you know the primary visual cortex tracks head movements even in complete darkness?

Guy Bouvier and colleagues managed to decode multiple head movement variables in V1 without light in the room, and discovered two distinct brain sources delivering these signals!

🚨 New paper alert! 🚨(1/6)

Excited to share our work, out now in Science Advances

We show that a rapid norepinephrine surge along a brainstem pathway (LC→PRN) is a key driver of sound-evoked awakenings

An early surge of norepinephrine along brainstem pathways drives sensory-evoked awakening
The locus coeruleus has a specialized pathway to the brainstem that controls sound-evoked awakening from sleep.

I'm putting together a slide illustrating how generative AI is being forced on people even though they don't want it, and this is sort of funny.

Here's are Google's autocomplete suggestions for "google gemini how to", and Bing's autocomplete suggestions for for "microsoft copilot how to".

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.
I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues

Thinking back on all this I better understand the pain I feel to see science under devastating attack here. It’s not just about my livelihood or my university. It’s about my identity. And it’s about a pursuit that I see as standing along with art, literature, and music as among our highest callings.

Just got word that our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Grant was being canceled. All 100+ institutions. So even private funding is susceptible to this administration’s unraveling of DEI initiatives

Maybe they will ask chatGPT which applications should be funded.
Study sections are the review panels that allocate NIH research grants. They bring in experts from around the country and have to be scheduled many months in advance; they provide the funds that keep the nation's biomedical research going.

It's hard to overstate the disruption this causes.
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
