Generative AI is the first refuge of a scoundrel
The folks at IntegrityTO have finally weighed in on neighbourhood retail with AI generated scenes of creepy faceless loiterers congregating outside a 7-11…

Mind you the recommendation (that didn’t make it past committee) was for *corner lots*. They can’t even prompt right.

To quote Letterkenny: fucking embarrassing.
Between this and the speed camera stuff, there is a death drive in large parts of mainstream Canadian policy and society.

Public safety conversations, bellowing, in Canada are all a sham and performative when looked at through these frames.

A long personal reflection on Filipa’s relationship with the now (often?) fraught Ruby on Rails community, its founder dhh, and what the future could be / should be. Good stuff, as usual.
After the Rubygems drama, I felt frustrated that I can’t escape evil people trying to dominate my life.

I found myself mourning the future I thought we would have; but also hopeful that it’s not too late to start choosing kindness.

Join me in building a better future:

The last decade of student activism—from trans rights and racial justice to student encampments in support of Palestine—has triggered a wave of conservative backlash not only in Ontario, but across Canada and the U.S. Now, that backlash is being enshrined in policy.
Doug Ford Is Trying to Control How Universities Operate | The Local
Ontario’s Bill 33 mandates merit-based admissions and gives the province unprecedented power over university and college operations. Is it part of a broader right-wing crackdown on campuses?

As plans for new regional rail stations advance, Toronto is reckoning once again with SmartTrack, a campaign promise that never really went away.

But as details slowly emerge, Torontonians deserve transparency of how these new stations will actually work.

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.
