A rough calculation shows that the odds that a U.S. physics or astronomy undergraduate ends up as a tenure-track faculty member in astronomy is roughly similar to the odds that a collegiate baseball player reaches the MLB. Both are (roughly) about 1 in 20 (about 5%).
