I'm at nearly 40k in this novel and I'm not entirely sure if anything has happened! My characters are just a very chatty bunch.

could not figure out why my mouse was pretty slow on screen, despite me adjusting the sensitivity on Mouse and Touchpad several times. Then I noticed that I was adjusting my external keyboard instead.

my favourite part about writing a novel about a selkie is getting to use the word 'galumph' multiple times.

Pippa Durham, 38, was looking forward to a new six-part series billed as a bodice-ripping retelling of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. However, she spotted a 20th-century doorknob in the background of one of the shots and has been livid ever since.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 430: Read. Read widely. Read what you love, and what you don't. Read what you know, and what you don't yet know. The wider your reading, the better your chance of avoiding the limitations of being influenced by only one author, one genre, one culture, one time.

5pm on November 1: let’s go for a walk, it’s still light out!

5pm on November 2: an early darkness blankets the land. Fallow fields lay bone-bleached by moonlight. The last memories of summer fade into oblivion. The last echoes of hope lapse into baleful silence.

It is so, so weird for it to be November, and I'm not doing NaNoWriMo. I did it for twenty years, it's a bit embedded in my writing habits at this point, and it's very hard to shake.
