The cost of deconstructing government services is being seen in #wnc. These Republican policies are doing harm to the mountains and the recovery. And the cruelty of it is the point.
I spoke with several U.S. Forest Service employees from western North Carolina fired over the weekend. Most were working on Helene recovery and wildfire response in some capacity. The mass firings are a gut punch to the already understaffed agency dealing with so much in the wake of Helene.
“We’re grieving for our lost colleagues. I wept through the weekend just thinking about having to return to work and watch them pick up their things on Tuesday.”
