In 2026, FilmDis will delve back into our television research roots.

We hope to do a mini study on where disability is on television now, after our latest study followed the pandemic.

We believe things are even more abysmal for disabled representation, so stay tuned.

Stop letting caregivers and parents tell the stories of disabled people. They never understand, and they ALWAYS get the story wrong.

We are convinced nondisabled people are incapable of writing disabled characters correctly.

Very helpful information to consider about how the disabled are portrayed in the media, even (or especially) in very popular "feel good" stories. Thank you @ebthen.bsky.social and @4wheelworkout.bsky.social for taking time to explain it to me.
It's not necessarily offensive, but it is harmful. The term we often use for it in Disabled communities is "inspiration porn", where Disabled people doing very ordinary things are put on show for non-Disabled people to watch and get feels from.

We have been developing television that we believe addresses the issues we found with various forms of representation when we were doing our multiple studies.

Did you know that The Handmaid's Tale Rose Blaine is a disabled character and is played by a disabled actor? Carey Cox has EDS in real life and uses a cane in real life, just like her character does!

Is it worth it to remake media that was harmful in previous incarnations to disabled people, but now includes a disabled actor?

! We wrote something new on the website: a review about Hush (2016). It's an old one but we thought we'd go through some blasts from the pasts and write our thoughts on them. What movie should we look at next?

One thing we noticed is that there is a general lack of disabled children on television. The younger the child the less inclusion.

Disabled children deserve to see themselves represented.

"I grew up never seeing myself on television. As a trans wheelchair using disabled person I've still never seen myself really truly and fully represented other than my own representation."

One thing I love about our studies is they contain so much information.

Like we have a good idea of how Hollywood separates types of parts with disabled representation being predominately one-off throwaway characters on most TV series.

Our message has always been consistent. As long as you keep watching media with bad representation Hollywood will see no purpose in improving representation.

FilmDis sets itself apart from other media monitoring groups because we are using our work to create better media.

A lot of groups depend on inequality to keep their work going but we want to end disparities because our work is about creating media not just examining it.

We include all characters – Lead/Main, Supporting, and Bit. Most studies only list characters with speaking parts or lead roles.

We've even documented what shows have disabled extras.
