www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Great news. HPV testing in the privacy of our homes. Of course further testing will be offered if HPV is positive. We can make cervical cancer a disease for the history books
At-home HPV test kits to be offered to thousands of women in England
The home tests will be offered so that women can check for cervical cancer without visiting a GP.

Mounjaro injections on the NHS currently have strict eligibility criteria with BMI over 40 (or 37.5 in certain ethnicities) and 4 out of 5 specific medical conditions. But it’s a first step to rollout and will help treat obesity to prevent the diseases caused by obesity in the longer term

When ICBs were told to make huge financial savings, I was still hoping that essential front line clinical services would not be cut. It’s a sad day in my 28 years in the NHS (24 as a GP) to have been informed that funding for GPs to provide end of life care as part of enhanced services has stopped

This really is brilliant news for our patients. Something that will make a real difference. So many patients taken off already long waiting lists because they got their appointment letter after the date of the appointment- excellent work Jacob ! @wpett.bsky.social

Pleased to have the opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer screening in our South Asian communities this week. Thanks to the radio stations and Islam Channel and B4U TV for having me on. It was great to speak both as a GP and a woman who has had a recent breast screen. #HelpusHelpYou

Savings definitely aren’t a given and currently we have hidden and very visible unmet needs. I have patients waiting for 5 months to make it on to the hospital outpatient waiting list- a waiting list for the waiting list!
Here @jacoblant.bsky.social highlights a paradox of the left shift to prevention. Before getting to the sunny uplands of genuinely better & cheaper health, you have to make your way across the rocky terrain of uncovered unmet need. Doesn't make it the wrong thing to do, but savings aren't a given.
Very true. But I don’t think it’s an argument to continue with a late treatment model.

At the very least if earlier diagnosis is providing better insight on true level of need we can have a better conversation on the resource the NHS needs. So much hidden unmet need out there at the moment.

Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating. Thanks @suelacey-bryant.bsky.social for my Eid chocolates! Many people around the world including Gaza, won’t have basic food and water this Eid. Please donate whatever you can @islamicrelief.bsky.social

www.pulsetoday.co.uk/news/workloa... I agree with this. There’s so many factors currently such as long waiting lists for operations. GPs are not occupational health specialists & especially where mental health is concerned, we may not have the knowledge to state that no work can be undertaken
GP role in fit-note process 'questionable', suggests Government review
The ability of GPs to issue fit notes and deal with work and health issues is ‘questionable’, according to a Government-commissioned review.

On this holy night in the Islamic calendar, I pray that the innocent people being murdered in Palestine and Ukraine and all those oppressed in the world, get their justice, if not in this world then in the next. May we be forgiven for not using our voices more and helping our brothers and sisters

“Getting the balance right between reform led by ministers and improvement led by staff within the NHS, will not be easy” the abolition of NHS England may be effective long term but with all change, we need to ensure this doesn’t distract from purpose of the NHS:to provide healthcare for patients
March 19, 2025 at 1:48 PM
Throughout the inevitable disruption that this huge reform will cause over the next 2 years, even if there are long term advantages, we need to ensure patient outcomes don’t get worse- more locally 50% job cuts in ICS is a huge concern for frontline workers and patients
"It is just possible there will be some real gains from this that could not have been achieved by a more evolutionary approach. But if there are they will be a long way down the road, and the risks are precisely those that Mr Streeting set out six weeks ago."

Nick Timmins on classic form here.
Lots of words will be written about Keir Starmer's decision to abolish NHS England, but few people understand how NHSE worked - and why it was set up - like Nick Timmins does.

So read his new @instituteforgov.bsky.social blog on a risky strategy..

“It’s almost inconceivable that ministers will seek to run the NHS day to day, so some operational function will have to be devised-perhaps like the previous NHS executive who worked inside the department” With NHSE being abolished, the question is what will replace its functions effectively?

Great blog:”what is a neighbourhood health service” and do the 3 different definitions and purposes matter? Everything to everyone can lead to nothing at all!
Does a neighbourhood health service mean different things to different people?

Chris Naylor says 'while everyone seems to be talking about neighbourhoods, we are not all talking about the same thing.'

People in most economically deprived households have twice the number of long Covid sufferers compared to people in the wealthiest households. A stark reminder of Health inequalities and policy makers and the NHS needs to do much more to address this injustice

Small, intentional, consistent steps practiced daily- is actually the key to success in most aspects of life.We need to value the grind as much as the grand- real leaders walk the talk and there are many, quietly running GP practices or departments in hospitals & community trusts- we must value them
Love this quote - « real delivery is about the grind, not just the grand » & it needs individual relationships, genuine expertise & hard work - from Thea’s opener at #NTSummit @theasrstein.bsky.social @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social

The increased item of service vaccine fee won’t help practices in deprived areas (whose uptake is lower and harder to achieve as @drgandalf.bsky.social explains) Inverse care law in action. Over 1 year since I had to give up my practice as it wasn’t financially viable & health inequalities widen
