The best news is from Glasgow, where the city council will run a trial free public transport scheme – for 1000 residents, for six weeks. Hopefully the start of something bigger and bolder.

Mamdani has promised to make NY buses "fast and free", plus free child care for under -5s. The win has international resonance. If New York city can consider making buses free, so can London and other big world cities.
