Ask me any questions about AI/ML, economics, biology, physics, math, statistics, or health & nutrition. I spent a lot of time thinking about these.

Tariffs, Trade Wars, and Globalization: A Quick Tour from 1900 to Today 📦🌎💸

I've seen someone say that in year 1900, tariffs on international trade were high, so it would be ok to return to that level.

Does this make sense? Let's take a quick look at the history of tariffs.

It's a Great Time to Invest in Biotechnology: Gene Editing and AI Drug Discovery 🧬 🧪 💊

People often ask which stocks I own or recommend. I’m getting a bit tired of repeating myself, so here are my thoughts specifically on biotech.

Jevons Paradox: Can More Efficient Use of a Resource Lead to Greater Demand for It? ⚙️📈

If you buy a car that uses less fuel per kilometer, you’ll spend less on fuel, right? That seems intuitive.

Brazil nuts are healthy if you eat just one per day.

But eating significantly more could exceed the maximum safe selenium limit and pose health risks.

A Simple Explanation of Attention Mechanisms in AI with a Dictionary Analogy 🤖❓🔑💎

What drives your favorite chatbot’s “thinking”? It’s a powerful concept called “attention,” employed by transformer neural networks for large language models.

Late-night cravings can be tough, but I overcame them by eating natto (fermented soybeans) or small amounts of other low-carb, probiotic-rich foods like blue cheese.🫘🥢🧀

My cravings are gone, and I can now easily do 72-hour fasts with just water and electrolytes when I decide.

Lp(a) – The Important but Ignored Lipoprotein 🩸💔

Many people have their LDL-C and HDL-C levels checked during blood tests but often overlook lipoprotein(a), commonly abbreviated as Lp(a).

Elevated Lp(a) levels represent an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

People often assume higher inflation is bad for stocks because central banks raise interest rates to fight it, making bonds and savings accounts more attractive in the short term.

But they often overlook that inflation erodes the value of cash.

Did you know it's fairly easy to derive solutions to quartic equations, even though the standard formulas seem daunting?

Consider the equation:

x⁴ + a x² + b x + 1 = 0.

We can cleverly factor it as

(x² + √α x + β)(x² − √α x + β⁻¹) = 0.

Many people fear cubic equations because standard solution formulas seem intimidating. But deriving them is actually quite simple:

Take the equation x³ + 3 a x + 2 = 0.

With the clever substitution

x = ∛y − a ∛(1 / y)

it simplifies to the quadratic equation:

y² + 2 y − a³ = 0.

When I started making my rounds at weekend family lunches with a spoonful of fish oil (EPA & DHA) for each person, it was all eye-rolls and wrinkled noses. 🥄🐟

Now, when I ask “Who wants to be first?” the kids shout "Me, me, me!" 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Who could have seen this coming? 🤷

When using AI coding assistants, I keep my code reproducible by embedding UUIDs in function names, like this:

def my_function_f2a6111c_cf32_42f3_a0ee_6826e32508bb

For every rewrite, I provide a list of new UUIDs. This keeps old versions intact and helps track changes easily.

Healthy Protein Intake vs. Exercise 🏋️‍♂️🥛🧀🍳

You may hear that you should eat a lot of protein, or you may hear the opposite. Which advice should you follow? It turns out that it depends on what else you do in your life.

Did you know human eyes are inside-out, while octopuses have them right-side-out? 🧍🏾👀🐙

What do I mean? Take a look at the image below, which shows a vertebrate eye on the left and a cephalopod eye on the right. The parts are: 1 – retina, 2 – nerve fibers, 3 – optic nerve, 4 – blind spot.

Dark Matter vs. Dark Energy: Clarifying a Confusion 🌌✨

People often feel confused by inaccurate statements like 'only 5% of the universe has been explained by physicists' or '68% of the universe is dark energy, 27% is dark matter, and 5% is ordinary matter.'

Any thoughts from experts?
Another more specific way people can help: does anyone know if it’s safe to take betahistine if I have MCAS? And does taking antihistamines make betahistine ineffective?

I went for a short vacation to Istanbul with my family. The city surprised me in many ways.

Even the name Istanbul, which I thought was of Turkish origin, actually comes from the Greek phrase "eis tēn pólis", meaning "to the city." Continued ⤵️
