Tanker Man at Tiananmen if he had a name, it eludes us all or perhaps it was left anonymous only his figure was needed memory's shorthand for the accidental icon the less than ordinary man carrying plastic shopping bags in both hands while incongruously daring a column of military tankers and incidentally leaving a footnote for history it turns out, his name is immaterial in the heavy crush of time's relentless tankers taking apart dreams tearing limbs squashing lives as generals and photographers earn their stripes and we wonder if he really stopped by after a grocery run also what did he get

Unseen wings The night, like most things, moves most When you ignore it Turn away and here comes day Rest your eyes for instant sunrise I fight the sleep sometimes I miss the abandoned hours And the inky dark prophecies they may Contain I kept vigil for the moon Once upon a time As though I was on a balcony In Verona On nights when I wasn't so exhausted That sleep kidnaps me And forces the dawn too soon And I ghost the moon I long for the chorus of crickets The hush of a sky so dark it absorbs The noise of me And the occasional flutter of unseen wings
