As reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer of October 8, 1893, Harry Wright suggested that umpires keep the ball-strike count secret until the at bat was concluded. The ostensible aim: to increase hitting and reduce growling. Edward Gorey illustrated the idea for Sports Illustrated on July 19, 1893.
