Polar historian 📚🌊🐋🦭
Now in October the sun is quite low, not even raising from behind the mountains any longer. It makes long morning blue hours lead seamlessly into long evening golden hours making it a heaven for photographers

The first northern light this season 😻 some people get confused thinking the more north they go the better the northern lights. Not really true. In fact, Svalbard is a bitt too north for perfect auroras. A bit more rare and pale than in other places but we have them too!

Polar bears are very dangerous for humans and there are no tours that bring tourists to polar bears (at least in the part of the Arctic where I live). The safest way to see them is from a boat. It the spring when there is still lots of ice, bears are seen just outside the town

Puffins are everyone’s favourite birds for their penguin-like appearance, clumsiness and well.. foolishness in a way. While many other Arctic birds can be aggressive (like skuas) or just straight on bullies (like glaucous gulls), puffins are just vibin’

It was a beautiful day this past August when our boat met a big (around 15 I think) group of humpback whales feeding at 80degrees north in between Greenland and Svalbard. We’ve spent about an hour nearby before continuing our journey back home to Longyearbyen

I showed pictures of Esmark glacier yesterday, and here is Nordenskjold glacier which is bigger, has bluer color and spikier surface, and melts much faster. There is an old mining town Pyramiden next to it that looks bigger each year while the glacier vanishes in perspective

When moved here in the early 2022 I thought I knew the place because I read Polar diaries since my childhood. In fact, Arctic was different. There were so many first times for me to see and experience things! Here is my first glacier Esmarkbreen with its distinctive colours it looks like marble

When you live so high up north in a remote village in the Arctic Ocean very simple things make you happy sometimes. There are absolutely majestic apples in the supermarket today. They look and TASTE like apples from an actual living tree not like regular glossy green ai slop

Trying to find a new place to hang out. X became unbearable with its 10 unrelated ads for every decent tweet. Threads offers me content exclusively from Kazakhstan?? I have never been to Kazakhstan. It’s beautiful though thinking of going soon. Meanwhile my neighbour Arctic Fulmar:

Foggy days in the high Arctic in August. It’s my fourth autumn here and I still can’t get used to the eerie beauty and total silence when most of the birds had already left the island. #svalbard
