This would be far more restrictive than Russian archival policy, if it's what people are speculating it might be.
Downright Orwellian. If you can't destroy the documents, remove access from anyone who might challenge official #history
A legitimate BUSINESS need.

Not academic or research.

Is it possible for @historians.org @oah.org @iehs.bsky.social and other associations to do the same as @mjfuhlhage.bsky.social👇🏽?

Oh: and also file a lawsuit?
I have just written NARA2 on behalf of the American Journalism Historians Association to inquire whom this policy seeks to exclude, ask what problems 8t seeks to solve, and ask if historians and other researchers will continue to have access to its holdings.

Ok this is bad. Legitimately really bad.

🧪 ICYMI: $25,000 bridge funding for terminated NSF grants.

Major props for to the Spencer, Sloan, W. T. Grant, and Kapor Foundations for their swift action, even though we (and they) know this is a band-aid fix.

Due May 30. Applications are brief: a 2-3 page memo of 6-month plans & other docs.

That was fast: HALF THE BIG TEN IS READY TO FORM A BIG TEN COMPACT! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Rutgers

Indiana
Michigan State
Michigan
Washington
Ohio State

Minnesota

1) Share widely.
2) Contact presidents at the above saying: implement!

Now *7* of 18 Big Ten senates have adopted MADC resolutions:

Rutgers
Nebraska
Indiana
Michigan State

Washington
Ohio State

Minnesota & Oregon are getting close, which would make HALF OF THE BIG TEN READY TO FORM A COMPACT. Administrations, take heed!

Plus UMass-Amherst and CUNY's Hunter!
That makes 5 of 18 Big Ten senates who've adopted MADCs:

Rutgers

And also UMass-Amherst. CUNY's Hunter College votes on Wednesday.

Add YOUR faculty senate to the list, and DM me if I can help you with connections, advice, or anything! Share widely!!

This is potentially hopeful and important. Is UMich senate talking about this??
A few thoughts on today's fascinating Rutgers Senate meeting about their academic defense compact resolution 🧵

1) Just having the meeting and opening it up to the public was so valuable. Rutgers President Holloway was there, and so were folks from other Big 10 and beyond institutions, including me.
Meeting is public. The Senate meeting link is here - senate.rutgers.edu/meeting/univ...

Please join us at Noon April 10. Esp hope Big 10 colleagues will join.

A few tips for NEH grantees:
1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP.

2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,

This is really the scary scenario. Brain Drain from the US. Before the Nazis, US academics looked up to European academia. We’re headed back there.

I think this is a real problem. It isn't that military history is 'dead' - it isn't - but that it is so uneven in its distribution in the broader field. Some departments have a lot; many have nothing.

Some grad students get a background in it; many get nothing.
It was something that drove me bonkers in grad school was the complete absence of any sort of curriculum invoking military history or theory. How are people supposed to make decision about war and peace if they don’t understand it as a social, political, and technical phenomena?
