Just to give the TL;DR on this one:

*The* main purpose of the EO is to move funding priorities and decisions away from experts and career professionals over to political appointees. With the ultimate power held by Vought / OMB.

As 100 days in office comes up, let’s focus on the next few months:

Trump is trying to stop spending at NIH to justify cutting the NIH budget. Every US scientist should be in contact with their Congressional reps about this.

Get grants and money out the door soon or the money goes away.

WTF?! What on earth is happening right now?
NEW: Per multiple sources, the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors has been entirely disbanded.

A VA colleague just told me about this today….I don’t even know what to say. Some scary, scary times we are living in.
NEW: The VA is establishing an "anti-Christian bias" task force and asking VA employees to submit any instances they witness of anti-Christian bias in the Dept to Christianbiasreporting at va dot gov.

They are seeking the following examples.

“No study is a better example of the enormous scientific impact of research on the prevention of chronic disease in the population, one of the stated priorities of the HHS leadership”
💔💔💔
Well the NIH has cancelled the Women's Health Initiative, the largest study of women in history

It has been running continuously since 1991 and has provided massive key knowledge about diseases in women

Unreal

Thrilled to see Macy Corley present on our NCI-Kaiser Permanente Breast Cancer Survivors cohort at #aspo2025
But bummed that NCI colleagues had to pre-record talks instead of being here in person.

Great cancer survivorship session this morning at #aspo2025 focused on personal experience, disparities, and sleep. And this gem:
“If you’re using an alarm to wake up in the morning, you’re not getting enough sleep.”
Ouch.

An attention-grabbing thing R1 presidents could do is to announce that should NIH (etc) cuts happen, they will reappropriate all athletics allocations into research to protect the core of their academic enterprise. If presidents had the chutzpah, this could stop the administration in its tracks.

Dang. Just learned ASPO (Amer soc for preventive oncology) didn’t receive their R13 conference grant from NCI for the first time ever, due to the EOs and delays. Still managed to hold a meeting this year. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Here’s what RFK Jr. has done since a measles outbreak began which has killed 3 people so far:

1. Buried a CDC report showing need for vaccination

2. Recommended vitamin A, resulting in liver damage in kids

3. Defunded vaccination clinics nationally

4. Hired a fraud to manipulate vaccine data

It gives me so much hope to see this! If I hadn’t been on a plane all day, I would have been at the protest in Seattle!
They are now estimating 2.3 million across the country. Keep it going folks.

This is great but also NIH grants are never funded at the original, full amounts? I don’t remember the last time I didn’t have a 17% cut right off the top.
NBC News: A federal judge just issued a final judgement and permanent injunction against the Trump admin — ruling that the National Institutes of Health must continue funding research grants at their original, full amounts.  @msnbc.com

I want to point out two things about yesterday's HHS cuts
1- a FDA office was cut that's completely funded by tobacco settlement dollars. The cut saved the US $0 but cost scientists their jobs & will result in unsafe/unregulated products on store shelves
2- state & local health depts will be harmed
April 2, 2025 at 1:06 PM
200 people fired locally today.

Never did I ever think it would get this bad. And I’m afraid it’s still going to get worse.

Am honestly sick over what is happening.
🚨🚨🚨 Four NIH institute directors have been removed from their posts and some offered reassignments to the Indian Health Service, effective today.

These institutes include NIAID (Jeanne Marrazzo), NIMHD (Eliseo Pérez-Stable), NICHD (Diana Bianchi), and NINR (Shannon Zenk).
