"'But you were always a good man of business, Jacob,' faultered Scrooge

"'Business!' cried the Ghost… 'Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business.'"

Enjoying Cavanaugh’s book. He notes that biblical descriptions of idolatry involve fashioning the gods to sacralize an economy or politics, and this leads to oppression and violence. He adds that idolatry is not just about belief. All humans, at times, are idolaters based on loyalty/action.

RE: the Bonhoeffer movie, Victoria Barnett is one of the top Bonhoeffer scholars in the world. She is the editor of Bonhoeffer's written works.
Well -- it's about 80% fantasy! They made a lot of stuff up, got chronologies wrong, left some very significant things out, etc. etc. Just keep that in mind. Looking at your profile and the quote: "Silence in the face of evil is evil" (often followed by:
"Not to act is to act") DB never said that.

“For God ordained that nothing be more conducive for righteousness and Theosis—if I may speak thus—and suitable for closeness to God than mercy from the soul administered to those in need with pleasure and joy. For, if the Word shows that the one who required aid is God—for he says,

Over the past few years, I’ve found William T Cavanaugh to be one of the most noteworthy public theologians of our time. Here are his predictions, concluding that:

“Bread and circuses, but the bread will go primarily to those who already have plenty. The circuses will be for everyone else.”
