Amidst all the atrocities taking place in the U.S., please don't forget the imminent threat of being robbed of our public lands. Once this happens, to paraphrase Heather Cox Richardson, we will never get them back. (Sample letter to U.S. senators included in article.)
The Senate Vote That Could Change Public Lands Forever
This week Republicans are pushing a legal maneuver that would undo a century of public land protections — starting with America’s most beloved wilderness.

New poll: In 2024, low-engagement voters went for Trump over Harris by 11 percentage points. But now they disapprove of the way he's handling the presidency by 13. They have moved 25 points against Trump — 2x as large as the shift for high-knowledge voters www.gelliottmorris.com/p/trump-lost...
Trump has lost the voters who weren’t paying attention in 2024
The least-engaged Americans have swung 25 points against him since 2024 — about twice the shift among everyone else. Trump has flattened the engagement gap.

In a normal government, this results in the resignation of multiple cabinet officials (Transportation, Defense, and Homeland Security), and the closure or (at least!) radical reorg of the cartoonishly incompetent agency at the center of it: CBP.

This week on Bearly Politics, @chadbourn.bsky.social has a look at art as the last line of defence when politics falters. From Chaplin to Dr Strangelove to Springsteen, he traces the history of cultural pushback - and asks pretty pertinently what’s missing now?

If Russian propagandists are fantasising about joining forces with America to fight Europe there is something fundamentally wrong with America.
Russian propagandist Solovyev fantasizes about a large-scale war in Europe,with the idea of a "united Russian-American army"fighting the EU:

"I don’t rule out the possibility of a war unfolding in the European theater of military operations -a united Russian-American army against the army of the EU

Eva Umlauf, an Auschwitz survivor and the committee’s President, said the AfD attacks democracy and uses Nazi-era references that are unbearable for Holocaust survivors.

Someone told me lately "Bluesky is just like Twitter." I argued that was untrue on the basis that last time I had a Twitter account most times I got a new follower their bio said "single & looking for fun" & here when I get a new follower it tends to say something like "professor of rare moths".

@jessicatarlov.bsky.social: "Yes!"

I notice US media is running with the White House line that the Jobs Report was “better than expected” - Navarro’s ploy yesterday to set a really low bar worked. But having your foot amputated is “better than expected” if they told you it was the whole leg and 130,000 extra jobs is historically low.
