I am increasingly skeptical of the whole AP thing. In the past ~5 years, I've had a consistently growing number of first year students crash out in the science, math, and language classes they've placed into on the basis of their AP scores. Acing the exam ≠ the ability to apply that knowledge

All day, many of you have been asking for a Cheney obituary from me. Get ready:
His Works Completed, Dick Cheney, Mass Murderer of Iraqis and American Democracy, Dies
As much as the Trumpists claim to disavow the War on Terror, they walk a path paved by the most powerful vice president in U.S. history.

I've long been using a LaTeX file for my academic CV, but now running into a problem where copying all of the Latex language doesn't actually reproduce the finished product. Bah!!

This but for the NBA Cup.
I have a modest proposal that the MLB should not play World Series games on Halloween.
My favorite Mets postseason story is nine years ago when my parents were visiting and agreed to watch my then-baby twins on Halloween so we could pass out candy and take the older kid trick-or-treating and they backed out 30 minutes in because the twins were distracting them from the World Series.

I am reminded that in 1998 I taught a full-year honours seminar on the 19th-century British novel for which we read twelve. twelve! yes, twelve! novels, including *both* Vanity Fair and Middlemarch. (Looks wistfully at the scant list of four books assigned for her current one-term class.)

Can't believe I sat here moping online instead of tuning in to the game.
Austin Reaves with 51 points & 11 rebounds, the first 50-point double-double by an undrafted* player since Neil Johnston in 1954.
It's just the fourth 50-point game by an undrafted* player in NBA history.

Sixers going undefeated. Write that down!
Of the four remaining unbeaten teams in the NBA, only the Oklahoma City Thunder (3-0) made the playoffs last season. The Chicago Bulls (2-0), Philadelphia 76ers (2-0) and San Antonio Spurs (3-0) were all in the 2025 lottery.

Incredible Sixers game again, but crushing for the producer to show the moment a young Hornets fan in the crowd had their spirit destroyed.

I don't find the White House stuff compelling at all, but he's deciding to undergo major govt. spending during the shutdown. Karoline Leavitt said that the ballroom was his #1 priority! Maybe the fact that most will never step foot in a ballroom is all the reason to talk about it!!!
What happened to Gretchen Whitmer? I care about the destruction of the country, I really do. A lot of Americans do. 7 million of them came out in the streets last weekend. Why do so many Dem pols insist on saying it doesn't matter?

I've been using the techniques from the Sinykin and Winant book in teaching a first year writing class. It's going well, but I DID NOT have any of this background on what high school curricula are doing. Explains much.
. @dan-sinnamon.bsky.social and I put CLOSE READING FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY together to help connect what undergrads do in assignments with what we do as scholars
then we found ourselves talking to a lot of high school teachers

Burke is totally correct here, but I have been surprised how discussions of NBA betting scandals have all focused on the complicity of the player (player betting on his unders) and almost nothing about coaching and training staff.
a reminder as always that indictments are NOT descriptions of things that actually happened, they are descriptions of what PROSECUTORS say happened

All this Nazi stuff is acceptable in America now. Instead of widely shunned and kept to the fringes, they now get defenses, or at least excuses, from mainstream figures.
I don't think Nazi symbols coming back in and Nazi-like activity rising around the same time is a coincidence. They're related.
