Today a student said “cemetery” instead of “sedimentary” and honestly I am not mad about it!

I will never understand the students that show up to the test without their allowed flashcards. Or the ones who leave the silly extra credit question empty. What 🪨 would u b n why is pretty fun!

My Nicaraguan Bff gifted the map of Nicaragua as a necklace. In case it wasn’t clear, I am incredibly proud of my heritage, ethnicity, and country.

In Nicaragua we have dry season and rainy season. This Californian forgot we actually have rain in the wet months.

There has been no volcano hunting on this trip. I forgot it is rainy season and I am not trying to die in a landslide/debrisflow. Thunder storms every. single. day!

We’ve called so many things “tipping points” that the public can’t tell when one really tips. Antarctic sea ice may have just crossed a threshold for real. The crisis is clearer than the language.

Students calling a rock VASCULAR instead of VESICULAR will always be funny!
October 9, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Students really overestimate what we know. I asked them how many minerals do they think I can recognize out of the 3,000ish! My three classes said 3000. 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Did not deny nor confirm. Lol

One of my favorite days from my planetary science for non-STEM majors class is when we mention Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin!

Other than her research, my favorite facts:
- Her childhood music teacher was Gustav Holst, composer of The Planets suite
- She advised two notable Franks: Drake and Kameny
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin ✨ figured out what stars are made of ✨ when she was just 25. 🔭🧪

Her PhD thesis basically established the Harvard astro department — at a time when Harvard didn't officially allow woman students.

I wrote this little profile to mark the 100th anniversary of her thesis:

California’s state rock, serpentine, tells a story of deep Earth forces and unique ecosystems found nowhere else. It can also be quite pretty.
