Here in NYC climate week & UNGA, the soccer ball everyone is chasing is private sector investment to replace govt funding. For my own organization, we can make that work. But what does that mean for public goods? For goods & services that take care of people but can’t be monetized?

This omits critical minerals (other than potash & petroleum) — Canada is also a minerals superstar. It’s a comparative advantage to have those materials freely traded from a friend, ally & neighbor www.nytimes.com/2025/05/12/w...

Microplastics are the time bomb planted beneath modernity.
“For instance, zinc oxide accounts for around 0.7% of a tyre’s weight. Though it is essential for making tyres more durable, zinc oxide is highly toxic for fish and other aquatic life and disrupts ecosystems even in trace amounts.”
Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.

Heavy vehicles eg SUVs/EVs especially.

Car tyres shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment – urgent action is needed
Tiny flakes of plastic, generated by the wear and tear of normal driving, eventually accumulate in the soil, in rivers and lakes, and even in our food.

Well that’s not good
The proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere grew at a record 3.75 ppm last year -- a jump 27% bigger than the previous record increase.

The best explanation: forests and soils are so stressed by climate change they're losing the ability to absorb our emissions.

Is the planet losing one of its best ways to slow climate change?
The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rose last year at the fastest rate on record. The spike has scientists worried that more and more carbon is coming from natural sources.
