The truly maddening thing is that, unlike when I was a young man in science and the materials and engineering just weren’t there yet, the future is *right there.* The problem is *solved*. What’s holding us back is not just greed, but this bizarre nostalgia, an obsession with petro- masculinity.
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity
Australia's extensive solar power penetration makes so much energy that the government wants to offer free electricity at peak hours.

I've loved them since they came out and it is absolutely my favorite car of any I've driven.
I'm a little late with this, but R.I.P. Tom Matano, father of the Miata (MX-5). My Miata is nearly identical to the one he's standing next to in this picture. I've owned a red NA since 1990 (when they first came out). Tom gave joy to so many people. www.caranddriver.com/news/a680045...

Traffic fatalities for kids rise on Halloween. Drive carefully.

Study of 42 years of Halloweens and 1 ,580,608 traffic crashes reveals relative risk of a pedestrian fatality is 43% higher on Halloween compared with control evenings. A typical Halloween results in 4 additional pedestrian deaths.

I didn’t read this dissent at the time, but beyond my opposition to the death penalty under any circumstance, full stop, I did not stutter, allowing the state to execute someone by a method, nitrogen hypoxia, that an onlooker described as “drowning but without water” is abhorrent.
Oh my God

torturous suffocation lasting up to four minutes. The Constitution would grant him that grace. My colleagues do not."

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

At a time where it feels like we're losing, we need to remember our victories that not only have happened in the past, but continue to exist today.

Thus I give you, California Condor 926 of the SoCal flock.

Great grandchild of Condor # 1.

We as humanity can still do good things.

this business model should be flatly illegal

taking on a bunch of debt to buy a company and then burning the company to the ground to service that debt while paying yourselves huge fees is a purely destructive practice that has never once had a positive outcome

ban it completely
It’s official: EA is going private.

The leveraged buyout will be financed by a staggering $20 billion of debt, which likely means some *aggressive* cost cutting is ahead for EA in the coming months and years.

Can anyone foster or adopt a sweet stray cat in SoCal?
Does anyone here think they would want to adopt or foster a sweet baby? I can help coordinate vaccines and neuter.

Found out one of the cats I have been feeding is NOT feral

He is so very sweet and will chrip and cry sadly at my door when I go back in.

I have no room to even quarantine rn :(
