He freezes at the first bang, then bolts in terror in whatever direction he is facing if there’s a second.

Every single leaf fell off our lemon tree recently (it still has like 10 lemons on it) and the neighbour reckons the previous owners might have sabotaged it. But by golly it threw some flowers on the tip of a spindly little branch this week so fuck it I’ll just keep fertilising and see what happens!
