Bullys Acre 2: Officers Burial Ground, Kilmainham Hospital – Situated across from Bullys Acre, the Officers burial ground sits in stark contrast to the "commoners" final resting place. Reserved for officers & their families who either served in the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham or were pensioners..~1

Rebel execution, 1916
A propaganda drawing from "Das Interessante Blatt", an Austrian magazine from May 1916.
It's supposed to show the execution of a rebel leader from the Easter Rising, but almost everything about it is wrong...

Bully's Acre(1), Kilmainham Hospital – Just inside the gates of Richmond Tower lies Dublin's oldest graveyard, & the stories & people associated with Bully's Acre are breathtaking. So this thread will be broken into three separate tweets. Bully’s Acre is situated in what was originally a priory...~1

The Irish Great Famine; “Gorta Mór” (Great hunger); “Drochshaol” (the bad times) is a defining disaster in Irish history. It’s the before and after of our understanding of our country. Generally accepted estimate is 1 million died, and millions fled, and the Irish population fell for generations 1/

Random Venice - a Banksy, accompanied by a "low res" Vetruvian" man. Also came across the Ponte Chiodo, one of the few remaining original bridges spanning the Venetian canals. Health & Safety bedamned!

Alright, so Venice does have some nice canals, to give our Grand and Royal a run for their money

Cantina Do Mori, Venice - the oldest bacaro (tavern) in Venice, dating from 1462, it is supposedly where Casanova brought his 1st dates to. So naturally I had to check it out. Amazing cichetti (think tapas) & local wine, these places are the ideal stopovers to rest & soak up the venetian atmosphere.

Well now, I hear they have canals here. Gonna check if they can hold a candle to the Grand and Royal 😋

Richmond Tower, Kilmainham – this beautiful tower marks the entrance to the west side of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, but it has not always stood here. Built in 1812, it actually stood at Barracks bridge (now Rory O'More bridge), at the junction of Watling St & Victoria Quay. With the...~1

Thread: To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, here’s an account of the world’s most famous Irish & LGBTQ writer.

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). In fact Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde!

His fame has grown since his death & his work is fundamentally Irish [1]

Happy #StPatricksDay everyone! Also Happy Birthday to one of Ireland's greatest artists - Harry Clarke. Here's a few examples of his work, including St. Patrick himself. Dublin has many pieces of his work scattered around the city.

Hope you all have a wonderful day ☘️☘️☘️

Proclamation by Rowan Gillespie, Kilmainham – A truly harrowing piece representing the executed signatories of the 1916 Rising Proclamation. Faceless bronze statues stand around a copy of the proclamation. Each figure is blindfolded with an execution order/verdict at their base. ~1

Irish Clans in the Sixteenth century: The word clan seems to have entered English via Scots Gaelic, where it was used to describe the social organisation in the Highlands, where it lasted until the late 18th century. But its origins are in Ireland.

Anyone unfamiliar with this account, its basically me walking around Dublin (city & county) and checking out all the cool historical sites & overlooked places that I find. For the most part.
