She claws at the ground, desperate for a strong enough grip to pull herself out, yet her numb hands find nothing but muddy snow. Chest burning with a tightness worse than the lace dress, she risks another glance at her parents' bodies. Bodies. The word creashes upon her. They're dead.

He stumbles through fire and death—scenes of carnage wrought by his hand. Everywhere he turns, there’s more. His hands, burning. His hair, soaked. His heart, heavy. He pushes on, trying to run from the piles of bodies, stacked like wood along a dirt lane. Away from the clouds of crows that call out in the charred air. Away. He can’t get away. “Bathe in moonlight, blessed suroribi.” Music. A voice like delicate porcelain, singing the Soutorian lullaby. It fills his senses like an airy cloud, shimmering, sparkling. Cherry blossoms surround him as branches sprout to shield his view of the bloodshed. “Sing, sweet suroribi. Dance, sweet suroribi.”

Here it is: We sit in his truck, and we speed along the man-made channel-between-trees while he tells me about the time he almost hit a cow, hooves stock-still in the road, and it makes me wonder– as his fake-leather seats bake in the summer swelter, door handle hot in my palm– why he won’t just, please, slow down

Pica swears he hears amusement in the entity’s tone. The serpent's casual way of addressing him catches him off guard. He was prepared to interrogate the entity and demand an explanation for the trouble they’ve caused. The questions still press against his teeth, but courtesy was beaten into him his entire life. It doesn’t hurt anyone to be polite.

A little bit of commentary on the world these days is what my brain demanded I deliver today. So, here it is... and then, back to work we go.
By the way, the font I used is called "Bitter." I feel like that fits here.

Photo is of a sad-looking, nearly-empty cubicle; there's a white desk, and on it is a laptop, a plug-in keyboard, and a desk phone. The walls of the cubicle are dark and claustrophobic. Along the walls are each stanza of my poem in white text, and the last stanza is placed on the keyboard (the stanza is warped slightly to follow the sideways angle the keyboard is laid at). Here is the poem: Do you know the instructions? Do you know the rules? Can you follow every #parameter, and do you have the tools? Will you do what you're told? Will you keep your lips shut? If you have any quandaries, will you not bring them up? Have you been briefed? Have you clocked in today? Does it all look a bit muted, have you learned to love gray? Just step up to your post. Just work to the bone. Don't give it any thought— you are no longer your own.

Don’t do it, Kole 😩
Kole gets up, shaking her head, at first because he's only right for the wrong reasons, and then because she doesn't know why they're having this conversation. Dusting off both the sand and the mixed feelings, she promises herself this will be the final time she's alone with Lars. The risk is becoming too great to afford; she's growing too comfortable with his presence. Mind set, she turns to leave. "Kole, wait." She freezes mid-stride. She'd be right to kill him for the infraction. She'd be smart to walk away and make good on her promise. He's been overstepping since they met, but this blatant display demands punishment. Short names are only to be used by the Family and lovers. Instead, she hesitates.

There is a big image of a gloomy cabin bedroom (credit to Marvin Nardo on ArtStation). The floors of the bedroom are wooden, and there is a red carpet, a sidetable with a red flower emblem, a bed with a grey plaid blanket on it, and a picture frame above the bed. On the right side of the screen, blocking the doorway, there is a picture frame (creidt to tree on Pngtree) overlayed on a new layer so that it is essentially floating over the bedroom picture. The inside of the frame is plain white, and in this white space is this snippet from my book: "She felt a strange sort of kinship with this entrance to her room–she felt like it was borne of her chest, her ribcage, its wooden panels made up from the slats in her skeleton. For in those late moments of night, when the moon was high and the plants she had worked on all day were resting, she was one with her heart, because she was the only one who ever even tried to peek through those bars and understand it." The "rib" in "ribcage" is underlined.

Ava doesn’t answer. The shapeshifter scowls and lets their gaze settle on the reflection of their torso. All of their ribs show starkly under their thin skin. Their hipbones are equally prominent, sticking out sharply from their body. While normally slim, their stomach is concave now—their muscles wasted away to mere scraps. Bruises cover their thighs, stomach, and arms, the angry ones from the quartermaster’s earlier attentions blending into the ones from days past. They frown when they see the ragged wounds, old and new, that wrap around from their back to their sides. Of course, they made it to their real form. Why would it be any other way? Like this, they look even more like the depictions of the sipu—a shriveled thing. Disfigured. Ugly and disgusting.

I don't know what's worse - how far past inspection this little elevator is, or the amount of people Kole has to share it with.
The elevator lurches to a halt, and everyone stumbles into each other. An elbow jabs into Kole’s ribs; to subdue the desire to return the favor, she folds her arms close to her body. As the grate rattles its way open, she flips a coin to the guard, who fumbles with it before ultimately making the catch. “Fix the damn elevator,” she mutters, stepping out. “What’s wrong with our elevator?” A new voice. And, with any luck, the person who owns this sunlight-forsaken hole in the ground.
