I know there's a lot going on, but I've just remembered about this classic and y'all need to see it NOW. (You'll never see a sandwich the same way again.)

Deep Thought of the Day (tm): considering that a coin flip is a mechanical action dependent on how much force is applied, how far the coin travels, and how fast it spins, is it possible for a person to train themselves to control the outcome? 🤔

This can’t be said too much.
I think one of the worst quirks of online spaces is the idea that if someone doesn't post about something, they don't care about it. It encourages performative posting often makes things worse.

I care a lot. I just don't want to add another poorly-informed voice. I'm reading & thinking.

As usual, Israel barely allows the world to condemn an attack on them before they do something horrible. Like clockwork.

Jesus performing miracles on people without their consent? That's peak Christian shit, and he's doing it before it was cool!

Ayup. The more time, energy, and political capital the GOP spends on infighting the less time, energy, and political capital they'll have to wreck this nation.
Matt Gaetz has filed a motion to vacate the chair, meaning Kevin McCarthy's job is on the line. Democrats should unite behind Hakeem Jeffries and not get involved in the chaos of the GOP. You can't wrestle a pig in the mud, after all. Stick together, watch them squirm.

Saying the things that need to be said. For every one of those who gets lucky and wins a Nobel there are legions that labor their entire careers in squalid anonymity. I’m glad Karikó is using her fame for good.
Katalin Karikó on the status economy of academia. She’s the hero we don’t deserve.

Gamer and reader of Star Trek books. In the 90s, before those things were cool. Went on to become the explosives expert of my college Chemistry Club.
I can’t imagine any Bsky early adopter was cool in high school, so what kind of loser were you?

The Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore has filed for bankruptcy protection, less than two days before a new state law takes effect allowing victims of child sexual abuse to sue institutions, no matter how long ago the abuse took place
Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, facing possible slew of abuse lawsuits, files for bankruptcy
Baltimore, the country’s oldest Catholic diocese, joins dozens of other dioceses that also filed. If approved, bankruptcy limits and silences victims.

I have a request: whilst making fun of David Brooks and his typically ridiculous mouth-farts, could you like NOT inundate my social network with photos of disgusting food? I nearly lost my brunch just now.

Watching this strike spread and engulf more and more industries that exploit artists is exciting. Realizing that it might actually change all of these industries for the better is exhilarating.
BREAKING: SAG-AFTRA members are about to vote on a Video Game strike authorization.

After a year of negotiation the union says the major video game companies have failed to address the needs of actors involved.

So they're calling for a second simultaneous strike.

I’m pretty sure the Book of Job is meant to be sarcastic, a reflection on the world’s unfairness. God never gives Job a reason for his suffering, but the reader knows it was just a silly & unimportant bet with haSatan. It was meaningless.

@josie.zone wrote a great piece in the same vein last year:
A Religious Fable That Confounded Scholars for Millennia Finally Makes Sense Right Now
The story is perfect for our harrowing times. But we’ve been reading it all wrong.

Star Wars (1977)
fun Hidden Fortress remake with a scifi twist made by a still green George Lucas (his 3rd movie) A lesser Alec Guiness vehicle but Peter Cushing is great in this piece of 70s pulp

Exactly the same applies to science
Associated with this is "no one goes into the arts to make money." One, it's wrong - I absolutely did, right from the start - and two, it's an attempt to set the expectation that one won't, or shouldn't, have financial concerns (and fairness!) as part of the creative calculus of one's life.
The "starving artist" myth is one promoted by people in power to romanticize the forced austerity of artists and writers -- meaning, to convince creators that being paid less than they are worth is simply part of the expected narrative when it shouldn't be. (See also: the WGA strike.)
