Tick-bite illnesses can be complex and debilitating. Are we any closer to understanding them?

This article from Australia’s ABC News highlights the work of Dr Richard Schloeffel who has been researching a group of people with ongoing symptoms linked to tick bites.

Scientists work to unravel mystery tick illness hitting Australians
Thousands of Australians report suffering debilitating chronic symptoms after getting a tick bite. But their illness — and the cause of it — is still not well understood.

Tick borne illnesses are highlighted in this week’s #Landward show - visiting an Aberfeldy farm where the sheep are suffering with “louping ill virus“ from ticks.

Tick borne illnesses can have devastating effects not only in humans but also in livestock

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Truth doesn’t matter to the supporters of Trump or other populists.

So how do you fight that?

The emperor is naked and they love him more for it
Truth once ended the charade. Now it’s content. The emperor’s still naked – and they’re still applauding

Was anyone else in UK weirded out by the recent Springwatch section on ticks? No mention of tick-borne diseases or sensible ways to avoid getting bitten. Just hilarity at letting a tick escape in the studio and lament about how the crew kept complaining about getting bitten whilst filming on site.
