President Macron is blocking a strong EU 2040 climate plan. And Chancellor Merz could join him!

I sent a letter to both of them today telling them to back a plan with at least 90% emissions cuts by 2040. Please join me in sending a similar letter!

Today I wrote to BE's Jean-Luc Crucke and Bart de Wever to call for ambitious climate action coupled with economic reform, to allow new sources of funds to maintain social and environmental safeguards.
We demand climate action. Send them an email now.

European politics derailed by the right & far right, legitimising a witch hunt against civil society organisations. Typical behaviour of dictators to eliminate criticism and official opposition.

A spot-on cartoon about the Bezos-Sánchez wedding, the couple having paid for exclusive access to parts of Venice. The proverbial cake is hogged by the mega-rich, to the point of making them sick from gluttony. Except their financial gluttony knows no limits.

UK PM Kier Starmer says "the welfare system is broken", needing social benefits cuts.

What is broken is the capitalist economic system, still concentrating wealth to the rich.

World leaders won't address this as it threatens their rich friends.

More equal societies need egalitarian economies.

Are we really going to destroy nature and cause more land appropriation in the name of saving the climate? Surely we can dial down our energy use to reduce mining needs?

Great to discover another hopeful climate fiction book. Rob Hopkins said years ago: there are so many stories about the end of the world, why can't we create stories about a positive future?

Not in naive denial. Rather, using our creativity for common good.

The truth is abundance, not scarcity.
Hopeful climate fiction (not doomer which can feed denial) can reduce psychological distance from #climatechange, demonstrate climate action & show collective action is effective.

Works for fighting fascism too.

Quite a day for steel, with the steel and metals action plan awaited today #SMAP. But you might have missed this info from your news outlets this morning: civil society also has something to say on the steel sector's transition to ensure that the journey brings public benefits along the way:
⛓️New report⛓️

Europe’s steel industry is at a crossroads:
1️⃣Stick on outdated, coal-based technology
OR
2️⃣Upgrade to green steel and step up on circularity

The choice should be easy.

The EU steel industry’s transition policies should include phasing out fossil fuel-based steel, scaling up green hydrogen and renewable-powered production, strengthening circularity measures, and…

We definitely need to hold meetings such incl COPs in places damaged by the subject of the COP (climate, biodiversity, even plastics) so the impacts/suffering is obvious.

While we're at it, let's also officialise the approach of naming hurricanes, tropical storms, etc after oil companies.
A COP in the Amazon should not hurt the Amazon. How about a COP somewhere climate damaged, so the oil & gas lobbies can see and feel the consequences of their greed? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Great news! The EU agreed a new law to fight against greenwashing & unfair company behaviour preventing people from making sustainable choices. Now eyes turn to how the EU law on ecodesign of sustainable products will be put into place. No doubt there will be LOTS of industry lobbying against it!
🍾Good news: the European Parliament green-lighted a new law to curtail unfair company tactics that hamper consumers' sustainable choices.

👏This means less greenwashing & better green labels. Now we need better rules to make sustainable products the norm.
