This is fascinating research. It's actually quite hopeful in many ways: IF (massive 'if' given the terminal cowardice of the govt) you took Farage on rather than pandering to him, you'd have a real chance of pulling his coalition of potential voters apart.

This is no single bloc marching under one ideology, or even a mass of ‘red-wall’ voters. What unites them is a desire for something different, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

What is always forgotten is that in 2016, the majority of Labour voters in almost all areas that voted Leave voted Remain. It's one reason why the then leadership's failure to fully back Remain is so unforgivable. It could well have tipped the balance.
"What I think Blue Labour believe is that Labour voters in the marginal Red Wall district have fundamentally different views on social (and maybe economic) issues than Labour voters in safe London seats. They don’t."

You may have missed this gem yesterday. From which we learn that:

1. Betting shops are really good for the mental health of isolated people.
2. Most drug-takers are not a problem.
3. Kids put tuppence in slot machines in the hope of getting rich.
4. Farage probably has a gambling industry donor.

I suspect being sued for a billion dollars by Donald Trump, who is about as popular as cholera in Britain, for saying something true about what Trump did (albeit with a bad edit) will probably do the BBC's public trust and approval ratings quite a lot of good in the end.

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

I fear that if Johnson were asked this today, there would be lot of umming & erring, some guff about "the custard of conciliation" & "the tiramisu of time", but he would refuse to answer.

That a US President tried to overthrow an election is now unsayable on the British Right & in much of the media
In 2020, Boris Johnson said that Trump "encouraged people to storm the Capitol ... I believe that that was completely wrong. ... I unreservedly condemn encouraging people to behave in the disgraceful way that they did in the Capitol".

Does he still think that?

eat the rich.
It is both ethically wrong & fundamentally anti-democratic for one man to command this much wealth and power.

States spent centuries trying to tame the power of over-mighty subjects. The rise of the global barons is not compatible with democracy as we've understood it.

interesting thread. Reminds me of when I did my dissertation in the early 90s and I went back through near on 40 years of British newspapers and it was very noticeable how little reporting of individual crimes featured - particularly the broadsheets, but even the tabloids featured it less than today
It’s fascinating comparing the front page coverage of the Huntingdon train attack (below) with how the British press treated another case 30 years ago.

I’m referring to the 1995 Netto supermarket attack in Birmingham in which a man stabbed 10 people, killing one of them.
