protip for anything ever is to get obsessed. draw and write and cook and craft and code and sing that same shit ten thousand times and not only will you inexorably improve but a lot of people will be drawn by your enthusiasm. they don't even have to be into it. the energy alone is contagious

My favorite instrument helped me regulate my emotions when I played, the fact I got better always felt more like a symptom of that than anything lol

(But I felt like I was better at this as a kid, and my comfort with some things (like drawing) has been very ripped out of me, so ymmv)

Pov that might make it attainable: I think a lot of folks develop their skills through a love of their process, rather than strict discipline to get better

like, people who learn music and go "this is so fun I love making sounds exist" have much less friction than those aiming for peak immediately

this is correct, perhaps more specifically I mean that bluesky comes off as a "failed" alternative to Many-A-Doubter
February 10, 2026 at 6:55 PM
anyways hopefully I'm done brainrotting thinking about chat platforms soon, it's been on my mind a lot... Earlier I was thinking "I should make a good discord alternative in godot" before violently killing the thought

...not that it's impossible to do... I just don't want to implement calls...

matrix clients are quite good too, but there's a lot of critique over its stability, and many clients are lacking features... in comparison, stoat is further ahead in features, but further behind in decentralization

besides that, I haven't looked into any non-matrix chat alternatives yet
February 10, 2026 at 6:44 PM
but IMO, we're still waiting on a 'good' alternative for the average discord user:

stoat is close, but still too early. probably couldnt handle a full-blown discord migration ATM, especially once they enable screen sharing. IMO they need more time+donations+trust, OR a more decentralized backend
February 10, 2026 at 6:44 PM
one example: for the average user, it sucks to use both twitter and bluesky simultaneously, but for chat apps? it is pretty realistic to use Discord+Something Else at the same time

entire communities *can* migrate, they're far less rooted compared to twitter, and nobody needs to be "left behind"
February 10, 2026 at 6:44 PM
well, just because folks didn't migrate to bluesky doesn't mean it's suddenly impossible for *any* major platform migration to happen. they've happened over and over again on the internet, and there's a lot of subtle reasons as to why some migrations happen and why some fail

after some thinking this is probably my #1 hangup with it yea. like its technically able to be Self Hosted but not in a way that is currently feasible for people to spin up very efficiently

It could be Any Thing
February 10, 2026 at 6:43 AM
the matrix clients i tried out today have a similar issue mastodon did for me, which is "the more technical literacy you have, the more likely you are to put up with the particularly-user-unfriendly edges," which is to say "i don't think i can convince my friends to swap"
February 10, 2026 at 6:30 AM
context: spent the day exploring d*scord alternatives. Stoat is a very compelling option for the average disc*rd user, but it doesnt have screen sharing just yet, so don't rush to change!! ... also their emails are clogged so account verification may take a while :P

plus i love saying hop on stoat

Take care of yourself first and foremost ykno? Gamedev is a marathon and really hard, especially when trying to fulfill crazy expectations (external or internal). But I trust y'all will be able to cultivate into a creative, fun process v^_^v

good reminder that there is always a first time someone encounters something in their life and when it happens it is not about personal intelligence or ability but just access, pure happenstance, and the entropy of the universe
