For me, this is the most remarkable Backlisted episode. After seeing the 1989 movie (which was … a lot), I started this show unenthused and knowing for a fact I would never read it. After @salenagodden.bsky.social’s spectacular reading, though, I bought the book and rated it 5 stars.

if i dismissed that young dev, we both would have missed out on that nice connection. i noticed more new folks in the chat starting to engage and ask questions too, ones they can ask an ai - but i was approachable to them in that moment so they didn’t have to. just something i have been noticing!

I see a lot of contradictions and small hypocrisies in both how tech is built and in how we, you and me and all the other individuals out there, engage with this tech. We say we hate algorithms but then we get overwhelmed by all the content or angry that the new space we want to inhabit is empty, isn't filling up with content (inventory!) like the old place did. We say we hate social media but then we demand the new platforms behave like the old ones. We say we don't like how much tech has taken away from us but then we don't want to do the work required of us to help build spaces together, to create a healthier culture, to engage with each other in more human ways. We talk about how angry and horrible the Internet has become but when was the last time you were kind to a stranger online? Yesterday on Bluesky, I posted a photo of my cat, and it was very popular. A lot of people responded to it, enough that I could not bring myself to respond to each one. But I tried to reply to some, and when I did, one person said "Thank you for responding." I sat with that all night. Thank you for responding. Thank you for acknowledging me, acknowledging that I exist and that I matter. Thank you for extending one small bit of kindness.

I’ve been studying civil rights protests for 20 years. With new mobilization against Trump’s agenda, I’m sharing a thread summarizing my research on how nonviolent & violent actions by 1960s activists and police influenced media, elites, public opinion & voters. 1/ www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Article title: Agenda Seeding: How 1960s Black Protests Moved Elites, Public Opinion and Voting Article Abstract How do stigmatized minorities advance agendas when confronted with hostile majorities? Elite theories of influence posit marginal groups exert little power. I propose the concept of agenda seeding to describe how activists use methods like disruption to capture the attention of media and overcome political asymmetries. Further, I hypothesize protest tactics influence how news organizations frame demands. Evaluating black-led protests between 1960 and 1972, I find nonviolent activism, particularly when met with state or vigilante repression, drove media coverage, framing, congressional speech, and public opinion on civil rights. Counties proximate to nonviolent protests saw presidential Democratic vote share increase 1.6–2.5%. Protester-initiated violence, by contrast, helped move news agendas, frames, elite discourse, and public concern toward “social control.” In 1968, using rainfall as an instrument, I find violent protests likely caused a 1.5–7.9% shift among whites toward Republicans and tipped the election. Elites may dominate political communication but hold no monopoly.

Hi Tripp, I'm a reporter with the Guardian US, based in New York. I hope this finds you well. I'm reaching out about your most recent article and its inclusion of the claim, "Young Chinese women have small fingers." What is the source of this information? The full sentence attributes the claim that such small fingers make them "nimble" and therefore "valuable" to iPhone manufacturing to unnamed "supply chain experts", but it's unclear whether those same experts are the source of the claim that young Chinese women have small fingers in the first place. Are they? How do they know? Is there a study you can cite? And are we talking length? Circumference? Is it question of muscle strength? Or bone density? What is the normative range for finger size, to what extent do young Chinese women fall outside of it, and how do you - or your sources - know this? Incidentally, how are you defining "Chinese" in this sentence? As I'm sure you and your supply chain experts know, China is a large country with dozens of ethnic minorities. It is hard to imagine that hand size is a trait linked to national identity, but the lack of specificity leaves the question open. Did hand size among Han Chinese living in Taiwan vs the PRC diverge after the civil war? Could this be a function of political economy rather than a genetic trait? So many questions. Relatedly, how are you defining "young"? Do Chinese women's fingers grow as they age? Or is size not actually the meaningful characteristic? It's hard to tell from the information you provided! I ask all these questions because unless you have answers to them, I am afraid that you may have portrayed racist pseudoscience as if it were fact in an article for the New York Times. If that wasn't your intent, I hope you will reflect upon the long history of certain forces using race science claims to attribute suitability for certain types of labor to certain types of people, and amend your article. I wish journalists would stop framing political news as wins or losses for politicians or political parties. It’s an abrogation of our mission. Why do we keep doing this? Is the spending bill a win or loss for the American people? Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Is it sound policy? Fiscally?

one thing about Abolish ICE in this moment is people can see how it’s not going to happen through Congress, but through people’s own ongoing actions, whether that’s legal remedies to free people from detention, coming together to monitor ICE arrests and activity—delegitimizing ICE day in and day out
