The bile came up in her throat before her eyes could adjust to the lack of light. Strix planted her feet, took a deep breath, and willed herself to be still. The An’belah had a superstitious saying that they invoked on the incredulous, the cynical, and those present when swearing a solemn oath. “May the scales balance.” When the teeth of endless sand and wind and Azeyma’s merciless, unblinking eye lay bare my bones, my deeds, the ghost of my every thought, when my heart is extracted from my ribs and weighed against her falcon-feather fan, on pain of alienation from the great river of life and total obliteration, may no evil weigh it down. May no guilt or regret tip the pans. May the scales balance. In the wake of its post-Calamity decommission, the Sultana was entertaining proposals for repurposing Halitali. She’d asked Strix for her opinion. Strix had demurred that the Sultana ought to use her best judgment regarding the interest of the commonweal. The sultana had for her part very graciously ordered Strix to stop being a stubborn piece of shit, admit that she had a personal stake in the proceedings, and give her honest, conscientiously-considered opinion. So here she was. She didn’t remember much of her prior visit here, not in schematic detail at any rate. Only that weeks of fear, anger, and crushing, astronomical internal pressure finally had a useful outlet. She stepped through the remains of a three-ilm-thick bulkhead door, frozen in the moment of exploding outward. The walls to either side were scored and streaked with black from flying, superheated debris, some of it formerly sentient. This cave complex had been a sacred precinct for the first Lalafell to land in Thanalan. A succession of convicts of crimes large and small, political prisoners, refugees, and other “undesirables” had filtered through these caves in the intervening generations, like water through an aquifer. May the scales balance. She thought of Ilberd. Thought of his insistence that she, like him, like all of them, was a tool in the hands of others, fecklessly doing as she was bidden. She didn’t need life advice from a man who sermonized about the matchless purity of his motivations, only to cut himself down small enough to fit into Lolorito’s pocket, but she thought of him all the same. She remembered now with a clarity that cut, how she’d fit against Raubahn’s side in the space vacated by his stolen left arm, frantically dumping aether into the voids in cracked ribs, torn sinews, and traumatized lungs. How, even then, even as he promised an eventual reckoning, he had twisted around to interpose his body between her and the kinsman unembarassed to bray about his singular faith while deliberately, systematically inflicting those injuries over weeks. If she had pushed Raubahn aside and let Ilberd have every bit of the fire she’d been struggling to contain since that one bad night in the Chamber of Rule, there might never have been a Shinryu for Papalymo to sacrifice his life to contain, or for Zenos to commandeer. She would be wrestling with her own choices in those moments for as long as she drew breath. May the scales balance. Maybe, though, if she’d given vent to her rage, she’d have only brought the whole weight of Halitali down on their heads. And maybe a small, insidious part of her wanted to do that now, as little change as it would make in what had transpired. She turned about and headed for the exit. The question would have to wait for some time to deliberate and a clearer head. May the scales balance.

Well. It was sure a month last month. We had a lot of donations and we're both extremely grateful for the support. Unfortunately, while we had reached $3805, the deep freeze from a couple weeks back absolutely ruined our home's water supply and pipes. I have since contacted a plumber to get the breadth of damage and well, yeah, it's bad. We're looking at something around $1200-1600 minimum and that's if we go without the plumber's recommended heat tape. We've not had running water for up to almost 11 days straight now, and it's genuinely miserable and awful. We have to raise a lot more money now to afford this repair :( so I've shifted the fundraiser goal from $5885 to $8385 to reflect the changes. Included are the plumber's quotes on the repair and damage, as well as the different quotes I got for the repairs. Please help us in this horrible, awful time. :(

Hello everyone! Update time. We paid our attorney with what we have gathered so far back in Dec 31st. We still owe the remaining balance. It still -needs- to be paid despite our attorney fighting for our legal fees. That being said, our attorney's services are still retained for now. I'm still looking for a new job, haven't had much luck yet, so right now we're very much relying on the help from this to get us through the month on top of paying our attorney. I'm also having trouble figuring out how to crop images for this update because every time I try it like hyper zooms up to one specific part, so I apologize for not showing an image of the receipt attached!!! I'll try and figure it out more soon. Last thing to mention is that this still remains an emergency and time sensitive, the sooner we pay it, the better. And for the love of God, I genuinely seriously need a new computer. Even my phone is starting to go now, and I know this sounds frivolous but I am a writer and rely on it in this modern age day. Thank you everyone for your time and seriously thank you so, so, so, so so incredibly much for helping us already reach over 2k. We have another 3k to go.
