automatic software updates were sold as a user convenience or a security feature but really just enabled corporate control of software and hardware

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.

capitalism just gets us a few gross families dueling each others robot armies over scraps of resources to build more robot armies and launch some frozen corpses into space. we need a better story.

the scary part is that once you admit the internet has real consequences in the world, you have to reckon with the awful bits if you want to understand what’s actually happening

It's stunning to see the elites capitulate so quickly. You'd think they would want to protect the law and the constitution that put them in power, instead of handing over their rights to a geriatric sex criminal.

after a certain point, the design of digital tools becomes arbitrary. then it becomes arts and crafts, where people have to make decisions and implicitly or explicitly put their values and ideas into a product.

The US president trafficked & raped underage girls, the evidence is overwhelming, everyone knows it, and this country's elites & institutions are so broken, so insular, so decadent that we can't even bring ourselves to state it clearly, much less do anything about it.

Contemptible & pathetic.

one thing I think we shouldn't lose sight of: these people are stupid, their ideas are bad, they are always wrong about everything. there is no mea culpa big enough to erase the fact that they have a child's understanding of the world and their vision for the future is not worth taking seriously
Since tariffs, I noticed a surprising trend: elite Trump supporters saying they might have made a mistake. So I asked them what they were thinking, both in November and today.

One big takeaway: they thought Elon was actually competent. That error proved catastrophic.

Some elite Trump supporters are having regrets. We asked them why.
After the tariffs, they’re worried they made a MAGA mistake.

Occurs to me that Trump's entire regime consolidation strategy is to persuade everyone through displays of force that the regime is already consolidated and there's no point in resisting. Which I don't think will work, but also shows how important public acts of noncompliance are.

AI is the ultimate accountability sink. An incomprehensible god object that can absorb all blame without the possibility for reconciliation.
